The current small WUs (ps_82test) are causing the WU shortage because it is increasing the network traffic. This happened not so long ago (MW WUs was as scarce as rocking horse poo) and was corrected by increasing the WU length because the ATI app. crunch a WU in no time. Experience normally prevents someone not to make the same mistake again! I thought experience is when one recognizes that it is the same mistake. |

Experience normally prevents someone not to make the same mistake again! Or one learns from their mistakes. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

It seems to always be on the weekend when something screwey has to happen. Nobody around to fix things for a few days. I'm begining to think the staff starts their weekend celebration a wee bit early and does stuff like this to us just for giggles.;-) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

It seems to always be on the weekend when something screwey has to happen. Nobody around to fix things for a few days. Hi What has happened too the WUs ? Only getting one or two per hour for the last 12 hrs. last week we where getting 74 credits per WUnit , now only 37. why the differatance? I normally can crunch 300k credits per day , now 10 to 12k if I am lucky. Ross |

Out of work again. If these short WUs are going to be the norm then we will need the GPU project and a different server to keep demand and supply up to scratch. |

Maybe if they would tripple the size of the test work it would help out a bit. The server just can't keep up with the demand for work. And yes, they really do need to get MW_GPU up and running. I believe I read the ATI app is ready to go. This waiting for the CUDA app so that it can be first is pure BS. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I don't know if it's the Test Wu's or what but I've had 2 ATI Cards go bad since they started running the Test Wu's. I know the Test Wu's seem to Hang when they get almost finished & that could be messing up the Cards. I say that because while the 3 Per Core that are running are Hanging 3 more actually start up running & show progression too, so that's actually 6 running Per Core & it may be messing up the Cards to some degree. |

A 12 vdc yellow cable in the power supply to the ATI card was completely burned through, melted. This is my first 'incident' with an ATI card since getting them earlier this year. I replaced the wiring and it's now............ waiting for WUs... |

I don't think any of my wiring is burnt, I'm running other ATI Card's with the same wiring that the 2 Bad were using and failed to run or continue to run. |

Hello MW@Home, I took over the BOINC server this past weekend (Saturday is when these "small" WUS should have started showing up). For the prior 2-3 weeks Travis had been running convergence tests on 5 degree wide stripes-- I am however working on 2.5 degree wide stripes which translates to half as many nu steps and thus half as large WUs. These WUs should be running just as fast as they usually ran before I introduced the 5 degree stripe size about 2 months ago-- is this so? I can put some more 5 degree tests up later today when I get a chance. Thanks for your patience, John Vickers |

Hello MW@Home, John, It's your project and you should be able to run the jobs that you need to run. Just bear in mind that a long stream of smaller tasks causes the server to run out of work from time to time because there is too much processing power to run only the smaller / shorter tasks... |

If small ones are needed to be ran I would suggest to also run larger ones. That way it won't bog the server down as bad. Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

Hello MW@Home, I think mix with 2,5 degree and 5 degree wu's will be the best. |

If small ones are needed to be ran I would suggest to also run larger ones. That way it won't bog the server down as bad. Is it the server that is really "bogged down", or is it mainly people who are dissatisfied because their personal systems aren't running 24x7? A mix of tasks would indeed be the best option, but if the work that the project needs to have done is of the shorter running tasks, then just how much catering should be done to those who do not understand that the needs of the project may not always mesh up with their wants / "needs"? :flame-protective suit on: |

If small ones are needed to be ran I would suggest to also run larger ones. That way it won't bog the server down as bad. I don't remember that happening there. I do remember that the original SETI@Home was running tasks over and over just to have work in the queue while they were getting the BOINC version going... The thing is, once there was some sort of tweak done here, they decided to postpone the GPU project. It was a bad idea at the time...and is still a bad idea. Not sure where they're going with the alpha CUDA client, but to keep putting it off is not wise, even if I don't agree with some that would say that the sky is falling because their system had some inactivity... |

Hello again, The server should be running nicer now (let me know if it isn't), we went from having 4 runs [2.5deg 2s (2): 2.5deg 3s (2)] to 8 [2.5deg 3s (4): 5deg 2s (2): 5deg 3s (2)]. So there are WUs in total, more 3 stream runs, and more 5 degree stripes. On a thread-related note-- yes, we do go out of the way to make you guys happy with the server speed. But I think this is part of our relationship-- we keep you happy by giving you work and credits, you keep us happy by providing the computing power we need. If keeping your boxes busy is the price to keep you crunching for us; well, that's a small price for 430 TFlops :) Cheers, John Vickers |
