Hello,

First off; i'm new to Milkyway@Home and running stuff on the GPU, so be gentle :p.

I can't seem to get the GPU app running... All it does is blast through the tasks and return the result 'computation error'.

I'm on a i7 920 @ 3.2 GHz with an ATI 4850 on WinXP 64. On the CPU I run World Community Grid or Einstein@home (currently Einstein), and i would like to continue to do so. Now that my GPU is idle, i would like to run MW on that.

Boinc versions i tryed; 6.6.36, 6.10.0 and 6.10.1. (currently back at 6.10.0)
ATI drivers i tryed; 8.12 and 9.8 (currently back at 9.8)

offcourse i did the whole renaming thing with the dll's in the system32 folder.

Can someone help?

I'm running the same setup; I7 920 w/ 4850 and don't have any trouble.

Try BOINC 6.4.7 and CAT 8.12. I had similar problems before that was recommended to me.

I run AQUA on the CPU and limit the number of processors to 7. This keeps the GPU running at 98% loading. If I open up all 8 processors the GPU loading drops to 85% due to AQUA hogging the resources.

Hope this helps!
Bryan

Did you just rename or copy and rename.

You need 6 .dll files in the System32 folder.

amdcalcl64.dll
amdcaldd64.dll
amdcalrt64.dll

aticalcl64.dll
aticaldd64.dll
aticalrt64.dll

Ok, I tryed BOINC version 6.4.7 and ATI 8.12. Same result. Every WU is started and go's within a second to 'Computation error' result...

I followed the install instructions as followed;

- installed like any optimized app using the anonymous platform mechanism (I'm not sure what to do here, but i just installed boinc)
- stop BOINC completely (stop the service if you are running a protected mode installation) (DONE)
- copy the content of the appropriate folder of the zip file (3 files) to your Milkyway folder (location may vary)(DONE)
- restart BOINC (DONE)
- enjoy the incredible crunching speed (NO SUCCES...)

/edit; @ arkayn; Yes, i copied and renamed the dll's

When I had that error message, "There are no child processes to wait for", it was necessary for me to install .NET Framework 3.5 before I could complete a task without error.

This is just a suggestion, your errors may be caused by something else.

I don't get it; It just started working!

Stil having a few glitches though;
World Community Grid is just running 5 tasks (should be 8). And my CPU is idleing for about 35%... how weird is that?

I want the following; Run World Community Grid on my i7 and MW on the ati 4850. What do i need to do to get this to work properly?

btw; MW is running 3 tasks now completing one task in about 1:44 and the GPU is at ~92% load.Would it be better to run 2 tasks?

Hey.
BOINC 6.10.x is still unstable and lots of people have great difficulties with it. However, I found a solution that accomplishes exactly what you wish to do.
Read here to get the idea.

So, with 1. already implemented in BOINC CC, its just the matter of getting the right amount of WUs running on the "ATI" client. I did this by setting ncpus to 3 in cc_config.xml and avg_cpus and max_cpus to 1 in app_info.xml. That way I am always running 3 MW WUs concurrently (as long as there are MW WUs available), regardless of work amount and scheduling of the "CPU" client.

Using this method, in just a bit more than 2 weeks, my RAC has risen from ~60k to 80k (and is still rising, expected to settle at ~90k).

I'm still suffering from the same problem. I'm really surprised the M@H team are refusing to update these drivers to support post 9.1/9.2 drivers. What are M@H going to do when XP and Vista have been replaced by Win 7? Simply give up and demand everyone start calculating on their CPU or assume that nobody is going to update their drivers because they've got nothing better to do than just run M@H?

Woah there. I wouldn't say we're refusing to update anything. We just put out our first versions of the CUDA/ATI applications last week. It's going to take awhile before we get everything smoothed out and debugged. I can assure you Anthony is working pretty hard at getting everything running correctly for people.

We really want running the GPU applications to be as painless as it can be for you guys, but it's a work in progress so please be patient with us.

Don't forget the project is still classed as beta(?), so expect some problems while they fully develop their GPU apps. The current ATI client is not an official project app after all as it was developed by project volunteers like you and me...well maybe not like you and me, much cleverer :)

Also the issues you talk about are caused by ATI (their drivers after all) and not the project.

Has nothing to do with Milkyway@home.
The drivers are produced by ATI (now owned by AMD) and not every driver version works with all card/OS combinations.
It is up to you to find the correct driver version (of which there are a number available) to suit your particular ATI card and operating system combination, not the Milkyway@home team.

So while you might be surprised at the team from Milkyway for 'refusing' to do what you think they should be doing, unfortunately they have no control over the situation.
So all they can do is produce the Application, this was adapted by some clever users (information shared with the project) so that it can work on certain ATI cards, then it is up to us users do a bit of work to get it work on our different computer setups.

I agree with you however many would be pleased including myself if you can tell us where a number of available correct driver versions to suit a HD 4890 or HD 4770 and Windows XP can be found. Soon owners of HD 5xxx cards will be in need of similar assistance.

His point may have been made in a less than diplomatic manner and directed to the wrong people but that does not mean it is without merit. Many have had trouble with ATI cards released this year. The new models due soon promise to be faster and more efficient, it would be good if they were able to be used, rather than having to be returned for a refund because they were unsuitable or too difficult to configure to work with stability. I appreciate the effort that has been made so far to enable the use of ATI cards on MilkyWay and hope that lack of driver support from AMD does not mean this gradually becomes another CUDA only project.

My experience - i7 and Q4950, XP, 4870, anything other than Catalyst 8.12 [which doesn't require the copy-dlls-to-sys32-and-rename kludge] doesn't work. I tried 9.1 - 9.5, copied, renamed, all gave good video but instant MW computation error.
8.12, after drivercleaner to get rid of the dregs of 9.x, just worked.
Cheers,

PeterV
