Device 0: ATI Radeon HD 4800 (RV770)
GPU core clock: 817 MHz
GPU time: 70.375 seconds

That doesn't look very promising... a 3 stream Wu done in 70.3 sec. @817Mhz...
Seems that it cannot compensate the credit cut..

He runs a X2 in crossfire mode (on XP, with Vista/Win7 the negative impact isn't as big). If you want to see a representative time, look here. Generally it will be below 50 seconds for a HD4870 at stock clocks and slightly below 60 seconds on a HD4850. An overclocked HD4890 will cross the 40 seconds mark (900MHz should be enough for touching it).

How about a HD5870 with 1200 – 1600 shader units ? :-)

They will be out soon.

Best Regards,

Bill

Maybe ATI should send me one to test on :D

Actually the HD5850 will have 1440 shader units (running at 7x0 MHz, don't remember exactly atm) and the HD5870 will have 1600 shader units running at 850MHz. The performance should scale accordingly. That means a "long" triple stream WU will just take slightly more than 20 seconds (my guess: 21.x seconds) on a HD5870 with the soon to be released 0.20 version.

It gets time for nvidia to improve their double precision speed with GT300 I guess ;)

With as much as you've done to advance crunching on ATI hardware, I know of few people who deserve one more.

That means a "long" triple stream WU will just take slightly more than 20 seconds (my guess: 21.x seconds) on a HD5870 with the soon to be released 0.20 version.

I can't wait to get both the card and the new app. :)

according to wiki, the 5850 will have a clock speed of 725. You can see the other cards coming out soon (both in sept and oct)

Mega LOL!

Still dreaming of a HD4870, should never have gotten that slightly cheaper NV9600... Will have to wait for a HD9876 or something moneywise now.

So, what was the verdict on this test?

Does the server code still need to be updated for this to work?
Was anyone able to crunch with the test project ATI application?

I'm not suprised.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

Don't feel bad that it didn't work or that the server was the reason. The Collatz project is running server 611 and it still doesn't work.

Even in 611, the sched_customize.cpp didn't have ATI listed as using the gpu. I modified it as follows, but there are still a few other items missing as it still doesn't work.

bool app_plan_uses_gpu(const char* plan_class) {
    if (!strcmp(plan_class, "cuda")) {
        return true;
    }
    //the following test is missing in 611 code
    if (!strcmp(plan_class, "ati")) {
        return true;
    }

    return false;
}

So what's the story? Collatz has it working now. When will MW?

Well, I think that they have also been working on the server code too ... along with all the other things they are doing over there.

Not sure if they really have all the sever side problems worked out ... I know the 6.10.6 is still bugged though I have not tried it ... for one thing, 6.10.3 is working well enough and when the reports say that there are still issues, why dive in?

Anyway, don't blame the staff ... this should have been worked out by the UCB developers last year when CUDA was implemented ...

So, it says I'm BOINC 6.2.18 for Linux....

Just updated to CCC 9.9 in Linux (my weekend project - almost broke my install last time I tried...but didn't need them with BOINC being the only thing I did on it previously)

Newest Linux version of BOINC is 6.6.36 (Linux x64)...link on that page for GPU's...says I need 6.1.0 for ATI...which I thought wasn't out yet...

can't find the Milky way APP..

it's (BOINC CLIENT) never recognized my card (4870 1 GB)...I'm dying for it to..

So am I on a different version schedule due to Linux? I just want the thing, badly.

I'm building an HTPC to cool the downstairs this winter, hopefully quad coring it with the GPU..

Just give me the app...let me burn my house down please. I'll be a guinea pig if you want to release it on my machine...

So how do I get this thing....and should I update the BOINC client, or should it not really matter and wait for Ubuntu to autoupdate it for me?

Second question...should I just give up and get an Nvidia card for crunching? Thing is...800 stream processors...come on...I don't want to give that up - I'd rather let it heat my house while saving the world (albeit slightly expensively).

The 6.10.x series is on the download page where all versions are available. Not sure which builds are available for Linux ...

There was a report that Collatz would run on 6.6.36 but I am not sure how they got it going... or which OS ...

The collatz anonymous client runs well on boinc 6.4.5. Works for me.
Cheers,
