Can't wait too long - my next Q6600->i7 upgrade is due before xmas. I was hoping that before then someone would have done the hard work of getting MW working on a 5870. I am hoping to be able to just take receipt of the upgraded PC, install driver [I d/l'd it, 111MB, chun-kee], attach to MW, install Cluster's app, and start crunching. This will only work if someone else has done the hard work first. Cheers, PeterV . |

I'm probably going to get one soon, but I'm getting it primarily to game on. If it works out of the box for milkyway, bonus, if not, oh well, my games will run better. |

Fair enough. ;) Aion is lagging a bit here and there for me on my GeForce9800 GTX+, and I want to be sure to run Starcraft II and Modern Warfare 2 very well. :) I figure if I can get performance on par with a 4870x2 or a GTX 295 for about 2/3 the cost and DirectX 11 to boot, why not? |

@ Ironwork16 Actually there is no driver for the 58x0 and WinXp from the ATI/AMD website. But with my Asus 5870 i got a cd with a driver for WinXp. This driver works but i believe it is less stable than the driver for Vista/Win7. Crunching unter Win7 is fun with the 5870... |

@ Ironwork16 Early game benchmarks and even one guy caught crunching in collatz seem dissapointing! One 5870 is equal to or slightly faster than a 2 4870 or a 4870x2. If we can expect a 10% performance improvement with every month driver release which is the historical case for both card vendors, then I'd expect card maturity within 10 months. |

Early game benchmarks and even one guy caught crunching in collatz seem dissapointing! Yes, but as mentioned in the Collatz torum, I think that card ran with less than 70% GPU load or so. When correctly configured, it should be able to reach around 350 seconds (depending a bit on the memory clock, which appeared to be a bit low). That is quite a speedup compared to the 600 something seconds a HD4870 needs, especially if you take the bandwidth constraints into account. It should be even better for MW. |

That means it It means nvidia badly needs Fermi to get competetive again ;) Comparing GF100 "Fermi" aka G380 to GT200 they are claiming double precision improvements between factor 4 ("early performance evaluations", i.e. no real benchmarks yet) and factor 8 (theoretical peak). And how long does a WU on a GTX285 take, about 200 seconds, 180 seconds? 180s / 8 = 22.5 seconds. "Merely" a tie. |

Intel Core i7 920 @ 4 GHz | Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Edition, (06.01.7100.00) | BOINC 6.10.10 | CAL Runtime: 1.4.427 (=Catalyst 9.10 rc/beta) I had this HD 5870 as a wingman on Collatz. I'm very pleased to see it is now completing some MilkyWay tasks successfully as well. Interesting that both HD 5870s I have seen are reporting 300 MHz memory speed. Perhaps this is because of the fast memory link retraining feature of HD 58xx cards. I am keen to get a HD 5850, the only thing delaying me now is potential noise issues as my computer is next to my bed. I don't know if I can be patient enough to wait for a Vapor-X or other quiet model to be released. :) HD 5770 may also be efficient and good value for money for MilkyWay, though perhaps a bit lacking in memory bandwidth for Collatz. |

"Anandtech now suggests it is going to be a 14 SIMD part. Which signifies specifications of 1120 SP / 56 TMU. A cutback from the 32 ROPs in Cypress is also expected - perhaps 24 ROPs. The memory interface may end up being 192-bit." If so it will be very fast. |

I upgrade from Q6600@3200 to Q9550@3570 and I am happy now :) Have someone HD5850? Some link results in MW? |

I haven't seen any HD 5850 on MilkyWay yet. If anyone has just bought one today to use here they would be a bit frustrated right now with no work available. However if a HD 5870 at default speed takes about 20.65 seconds to complete a MilkyWay task then a HD 5850 at default speed should take about 26.9 seconds. |
