I don't really know anything about this stuff, and the people who do know probably already heard about this, but AMD has announced a Stream SDK with OpenCL support. Could this be a first step towards a combined ATI/Nvidia program? Or wouldn't this affect MW at all? |

This thread in Collatz seems to be discussing the same question. The forum admin is not yet convinced (last post) Go away, I was asleep |

Right now only single precision applications can be targeted with the OpenCL SDK. I guess it will be done sometimes in 2010. But the current apps will continue to work ;) |

Could this be a first step towards a combined ATI/Nvidia program? Or wouldn't this affect MW at all? History says that when you have some form of generic slash cross-platform system, such as OpenCL ... you may pay for that portability with slower execution speeds ... the operative word is *MAY* ... For a project that has not invested in GPU programming to this point using OpenCL may make sense in that one source code set could allow you to target both GPU classes... for MW and Collatz which has already written the programs (thank you CP and all else involved) converting to OpenCL means doing it all over again ... not necessarily a good idea ... or even needed as they already have made the investment in the applications ... GPU Grid and Einstein that may want to increase penetration of the available GPUs might consider using OpenCL rather than to make a specific ATI application as they could then, if desired, and if the efficiency loss was not too great, drop the Nvidia specific version and concentrate moving forward on the OpenCL version only ... It is still early days for OpenCL, the only good news is that it would also allow GPU use for Macs that have GPUs (like mine)... Honestly, I don't expect that we will see anything until mid-2011 unless CP gets an itch ... :) |

>allow you to target both GPU classes Unless it is much ado about nothing ... or they get bought out ... or it is a secret plot to fool Santa Claus ... |

>allow you to target both GPU classes Oh? Whats that all about? Nvm: I found that post about the end of the 260, 275, etc. Tho they are launching 210s and 220s... and aren't the GTX 3xx cards coming like next month? |
