Is it that there are so many people working on the project that its passed out and finished that quickly? |

Yes. Actually, the lack of available work is probably a function of several factors. 1) Project ennui at the project site -- I really sense that the folks responsible for this project have gotten a bit 'tired' of the process and no longer devote top tier attention to it. 2) Because this project is one of only two BOINC projects offering ATI GPU credits, folks who have that sort of hardware (and for this project this is high end ATI cards pushing out a lot of work very fast), gravitate to this project. 3) Because of the relatively high credit pay outs, not only for GPU cards (but CUDA and ATI double precision cards) but also for CPU projects, this project has attracted a lot of higher power (ie faster processing) users. With the optimized applications for this project readily available, the capacity to complete work is very high indeed. 4) The only other project that has BOINC ATI GPU support was largely inaccessible from Friday night through this morning. Folks who have double precision ATI cards may have tried to get work here instead. Frankly, I tend to believe the primary factor is the first one I listed -- where as say six months ago we saw a fairly high degree of involvement and communication from the project, these days the informational and participation vacuum is quite depressing. Is it that there are so many people working on the project that its passed out and finished that quickly? |

I wonder how many threads we can get started complaining about no work. Why not post to an existing thread ? . |

I agree keeping No Work threads in sync, but I think BarryAZ brings up an interesting point/question. I wonder if admins have lost interest. Is this project the primary source of their research results? If the project is run by the school, they should be well into the Fall Semester by now, and you would anticipate that both the computing side and the astronomy side would be interested in the progress the project is making... But perhaps BOINC is not the primary source of data for their research, or there are exams, or a lack of funding (as is requested in a different section). It could be that Travis has had a death in the family, or got a girlfriend, or a thousand other things that pull people away from their computer... For me at least it comes down to why you crunch... I would probably stop donating cycles here if I thought the results were going into the trash bin, and not contributing to very interesting research. But I can not buy a trip to Italy with the credits from BOINC, so Im not sure what all the fuss is about. It does raise a valid challenge for the team at UCB, I would like to crunch MW exclusively, and if there are no WU, then crunch Collatz, etc. But I dont think the current BOINC client can handle that type of scheduling (and personally think it doesnt handle busy project servers all that well either). The interesting thought I had, was that MW, BOINC, and other projects have figured out how to use distributed CPU/GPU cycles, but have not effectively harnessed the immense amount of heart & brain "cycles" on the internet. Other than Gipsel and a few others, how do we leverage this great network of enthusiasts to help out with projects? Sorry Im rambling, but thought I would share a few thoughts on the topic rather than just raising another 'no work' post like I have in the past. |

This project never promised to be 24/7. I expect that in the next 24 hours it will be sorted. Don't drink water, that's the stuff that rusts pipes |

well project Admins have lifes to and families and responsibilities in real life that need to be taken care of now and then... so dont be to hard on them. sometimes you just need to get out for a while to de-stress... |

It does raise a valid challenge for the team at UCB, I would like to crunch MW exclusively, and if there are no WU, then crunch Collatz, etc. But I dont think the current BOINC client can handle that type of scheduling (and personally think it doesnt handle busy project servers all that well either). This has been suggested and rejected... in essence the ability to set a flag on projects as main and back-up so that for the most part you don't process tasks off the back up project unless there is a problem with the main projects ... you other observation is also correct, though you missed a lot of other conditions where BOINC does not serve the users very well ... I tend to run a lot of projects and BOINC does not seem to handle the running of 10+ projects well either ... there are Trak tickets on some of the issues and lots of posts on some others ... but UCB seems to like to ignore the user base in favor of their own "vision thing" because as we all know the way to attract users is to not listen to their suggestions ... |
