That said though, I don't think a server upgrade alone will suffice... The GPUs need more complex work so that they are not pounding away all the time... So, both projects are experiencing either the same or very similar issues. At some point maybe people will understand that projects simply are not prepared to deal with this at this point. They can get mad if they choose, but it won't change the reality of what is happening. The current tasks are still well within the capability of my 5-7 year old CPUs. They can be handled with relative ease by more modern CPUs. This is boiling down to a pure Supply vs. Demand scenario. Demand is high, but supply is limited / low. When this situation happens, the "cost" is high. The problem is, if people keep on ragging on the project because of just not being able to climb up the BOINC leader standings as fast as they want, there is the risk that this project will simply decide that there is less overhead by getting an internal cluster and running tasks on the internal cluster. That stops the noise and expense of having to try to keep people happy... It might not be as fast as utilizing BOINC, but there could be a point where it is "fast enough"... People should try to keep that in mind... |

Also, I must admit, that I have overreacted a bit in my previous posts, as I discovered, that for some unknown reason, my ATIs were running a bit (around 20%) slower from 10am UTC till now (I noticed, that my Collatz tasks took 20% longer to complete). However, considering this the new WUs are still some 1.6 times longer than before, but grant the same credit, which still stinks. The newer Collatz tasks grant proportional credit at least those that I have checked. There are still some older tasks laying about so you may get a mix of old 500 something and newer 700 something tasks ... But I fail to understand that eye poking thing you wrote at the end of your post. Well, having a few slow to medium GPUs working for me is a lot more fun that the alternatives I was suggesting ... then again, maybe some out there enjoy poking their eyes with sticks ... :) |

What I meant to say is, that after looking at my Collatz results i fugured out that something is wrong with my cards. I was already used to new Collatz runtimes and new credits, however during that "slow" period those already longer times got another 20% longer, which, considering pretty consistent run times over there, signaled me that there was problem on my side of the line. Eyes and sticks don't go along too well, but I still fail to see what do eyes on sticks have to do with GPU crunching, except for the fact, that with eyes on a stick, one cannot use a GPU for much more than crunching and heating. But I fail to understand that eye poking thing you wrote at the end of your post. Vid, the saying; "better than a sharp stick in the eye" just means that things could be worse. This is American slang. Bryan |

Ah, I see (therefore no eyes poked) :D It was just the first time I ran across this saying and didn't know how to interpret it. Now it makes sense, thank you for explanation. BR, |

Ice and I don't agree on a lot of things, but on this occasion I will support what he says. Once Travis has finished his studies and the new equipment arrives, this project will get a new lease of life. I would also urge people to stay. Don't drink water, that's the stuff that rusts pipes |

>eyes, sticks Brilliant! When I stop rolling on the floor, laughing, I need to get a laser somewhere, to hang such a notice beside it. .) BR, |

I dont post here normally as milkyway is my back up project for seti@home. I know some of you also do or did seti. There is a project that has had a lot of server issues. The difference is that seti communicates a hell of a lot better. My one observation is that milkyway will not post a little notice saying that hey we have a problem hang on to your hats a few hours ,days, or what ever. Now I know seti doesnt always give an up to the second account . But in my opinion if your web page is up and you crash , post a blurb, it will work wonders for keeping morale up. Me, i like the science this project does i will stick around and do my small pittance for it. |

I guess you weren't around at Seti just a few years ago when you were lucky to get a home page news updated once a month. The Dev's avoided posting in the forums because of all the abuse they received. We only started to get regular updates when Matt found the courage to start the Technical forum. Even now, people complain when he takes personal time without warning and skips a few days of posting or when he's too busy fixing things to do an update. I've come to accept that the volunteer denizens of the Boinc project are a very self-centered and demanding bunch. Once I determine a project is worthwhile, it takes a lot more than a few sever/forum hiccups, adjustment of credits for parity, or busy dev's with personal lives to make me go away. I've seen projects with much greater growing pains or victims of their own success. I can be very patient and understanding when necessary or warranted. Questions? Answers are in the BOINC Wiki. I would urge people not to leave Milkyway. My beef is that things could be improved, and some attention from admin would be appropriate which has happened recently. I think it is sad that this only happens though when the forums are overrun with complaints. Between that and the constant unfulfilled promise of upgrading hardware I think it speaks volumes. |
