[quote]Predictor...well...there were mistakes made on both sides of that issue...

What 'other' side was there? That project's lack of communication truly sucked.

Apparently you were not following the same saga (the hacker saga). Both sides caused the situation to be much worse than what it was originally...

Collatz seems to be down now, so my GPUs have nothing to do.
Perhaps it is time for a litte gaming?

That's why most Collatz crunchers maintain a cache of 1 day or so, to cover hickups in the processing... (usually after a weekend there's some catching up with pending WU's)

Collatz is pretty much a one person endeavor and Slicker noted he was going to be away on vacation -- with only periodic remote access to reset things as necessary. So to the extent that Collatz is running during the next week, that will be something of a gift.

Collatz seems to be up again

There are projects which demonstrate an extended life cycle -- I noted some of those elsewhere. Frankly, I suspect that MW will not be one of those. Should Travis be successful in his Thesis defense (and I HOPE he IS), then his focus will be on completing that work with a view toward getting his formal degree in the next semester, and then, absent a Postdoc at RPI, he'll be moving on. We've no evidence that MW has the committed support of anyone else at RPI to continue pushing the project forward.

Just wanted to say that I will be doing a post-doc here at RPI until at least the end of next summer. So MW will be around until then at the very least. :P I should be able to get someone new up to speed by then, and I may be around even longer depending on funding and how my job search pans out.

Either way, MW has been a great source of publications and a wonderful research project, so I expect to keep working with it as long as they let me :P

Can you at least keep it going so that I can get my 65 mill and retire ?

That is all good to know -- it means the project has at least another 8 months of life (by which time we can hope not only that someone else at RPI steps up to the plate but also that other GPU BOINC projects surface to share the wealth as it were). It is also good to know that you have employment out for another 10 months or more. In these current times, that is definitely at 'good thing'.

From the update today, it seems that the 'reverse Wrath of Kahn' time scale off of the original estimate is now confirmed (days mean weeks).

Travis:
I read in the forums recently that you had a number of hard drives damaged due to construction around campus. To reduce the damage to the hard drives, have you looked at shock-mounted external hard drives or shock mounted hard drive internal cases?
See link:
http://www.quietpcusa.com/Smart-Damper-Hard-Disk-Drive-Antivibration-Mount-P525C3.aspx

Anti-vibration hard drive cases will protect your new hard drives on order.

I use these : http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/product.php?product_id=2814

fit 4 HDDs in this baby, with A 120mm fan, and anti vibration :) should fit any 3x5.25" slots :)

That was on TV in HD last night(dang I hate It when I start posting and suddenly, Firefox3 does a backspace on Its own) on Dish Network. Hopefully Travis can find a willing person to take MW over, Not that I want to see Him leave mind You, But If and when He's ready to depart I hope He has someone.

Another grad student would step into the role.

Is something being done with the server or did it cut out for a bit?

Yup, its down again, and even with the huge cache of WUs I had my 5870 has run dry. My 4850 still has a lot, and I think big brother is jealous, lol. Hopefully Slicker will be able to remotely kick the validator soonish, as its been down since I woke up this morning. Ah, i can't wait til more projects get decent ATI apps out. SETI doesn't count, that app is a bloody joke.

PrimeGrid has a working cuda app for linux, not quite boinc ready tho. And I think someone has started work on an ATI app too. Need to send over the ATI Guru :)

Hoping I'll make it to a million some day in order to equal 40,000 WCG points.
