Today, i checked some boinc projects boards like seti, MW, collatz, einstein, gpugrid etc.. i noticed that people are experiencing same problem everywhere.. No work unit, server crashes, unstable servers, unstable WU's , unbalanced credits, GPU vs CPU war...

To be honest, i only care about credits, i don't even know what my gpu does.. because, i search for E.T's that may never visit earth, im helping mapping Milkyway! , or im searching for a prime number which consist of quadrillon digits..?

What are we doing? really?

Well I for one enterprise am having fun like you getting all the credits that I can and fine tuning my systems do it more efficiently..

And I must tell you that I am having a blast.

Science is also one of my interest, but hey come on those worthless credits seem to dig deep into you and make one cry for more..:)

Yeah what Dan said!! I'm learning things to boot, now I know how to install opp apps and how to modify them if needed. Things I never even knew existed b4 running Boinc.

lol im using my crunchers to heat my house right now being my gas has been

shut off because of this economic BS and well i just couldnt keep up

with the rising prices of natural gas :(

but hay with a few GPU cards and all the cores pounding away they will

throw out a good bit of heat :) :)

If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

There are times when I wonder why there aren't more boinc-type projects out there, or at least projects that have operational uptime consistency and duration.

Maybe the benefits of all this multiprocessing are overstated.

I can think of several reasons.
1) Fundamental research is more popular and often more respected than applied research.
2) Many physicists/astrophysicists are too deeply entrenched in their fields to accept the help of computer scientists.
3) Many consider BOINC to be too unreliable - although Milkyway@Home is showing that not that much redundancy is needed in their case.
4) Similarly, it is very difficult to calculate ahead of time how much crunching power BOINC will give you - this prediction is much simpler for a conventional supercomputer, which probably makes it easier to get a grant for the research (even if it is more expensive).

I remember a tale that a scientist was asked what the benefit of his
research was and he replied "What is the benefit of a new born child?"

My hope is that the information gathered in many different projects here can
be used as steps that can evolve in major brake trough in the future.

The scientific world probably still thinks of Boinc and its crunchers as nothing more than a band of enthusiastic amateurs. Given the choice between funding a super computer run by professional scientists with PhD's, and us, it's a bit of a no contest. Once more Boinc projects report that valuable research has been done that view might change.

There have been a few papers that have come out of the BOINC community. More are on the way.

But, the fragile nature of BOINC, the efforts to keep it that way, and the resistance to improvements and suggestions stand in the way ... the only thing BOINC has going for it is cost. But how many people went out and bought Yugos that were not forced to because of cost?

Until UCB starts to take seriously the issues of reliability this will not change ...

Now that's a hope that I entirely agree with and it would probably be the prime reason why I participate. Without research we humans are never going to get out there and populate the universe, and more importantly, discover all the wonderful things waiting for us out there ;)
