I installed a GeForce 210 board in my system ('cuz it was cheap...), but it is not supported by this project according to a message I get when the project tried to send me GPU WU's. So, I went to my preferences for the project and unchecked the box saying to use a GPU if present. But, the project is still trying to send me GPU WU's -- how come? I am still receiving CPU WU's OK. For the record, I am successfully running GPU WU's for seti@home and einstein@home.

Can't tell what version BOINC you are using. Sadly, one of the issues is that this change was made without considering the impact and it is benign in the sense that it is mostly annoying rather than damaging. The system should slowly increase the back off so the messages are not that common.

There is some discussion on how to make the messages less intrusive and more rare ... but some of that requires updates to the server side software... something that is coming real soon now ... :)

"Can't tell what version BOINC you are using. "

I'm using 6.10.18 -- the latest version, I believe. It appears to me that the problem is due to the project not communicating with BOINC that it does not want GPU WU's as I can turn them off OK from seti@home and einstein@home. OK, so it is only a minor annoyance, but seems like it is something that should be fixed. (But I agree that there are probably more important issues that come first...)

It appears to me that the problem is due to the project not communicating with BOINC that it does not want GPU WU's ....

There are two parts to the BOINC framework - that which runs on the project's server and the client part that runs on your host. You can set preferences in both places, remembering that if you support several projects, you will need to consider the project server settings for each project independently. For example you could set both E@H and Seti to allow GPU work and you can turn off GPU work for MW. I assume this is what you have done - at each project.

By default, the 6.10.x BOINC clients are set to allow GPU work. You can configure the BOINC client through cc_config.xml - check out the <no_gpus> option. I've never tried this so I have no experience on how well it does or doesn't work. However I'm guessing if you set <no_gpus> (see linked instructions) in the client you wont get any GPU work for any project and this may not be at all what you want. In other words you can't (yet) turn off the client on a 'per project' basis.

Also, I believe we are all still waiting for server upgrades at MW that may very well have some bearing on all this. I think all people running MW GPU apps are affected by this. I don't think it affects you since you don't want to run GPU tasks here.

I believe the default to allow GPU requests is why the client keeps asking for GPU work for all projects, even though you may have the supply turned off at the server or the project has no GPU app at all. The client request is relatively harmless (but looks messy) since the server will refuse the request if the settings there so dictate.

Cheers,
Gary.
