Why is the deadline for the work units only 48 hours? I'm running 3 projects with a resource share of 33.3% each and the only way I can a unit in on time is by leaving the PC on 24/7. And that's on my core2duo machines, it is impossible for my p4 machines. On my Core2Duo a workunit takes 16 hours but split up with the other projects it takes 48 hours. Just enough time, provided I don't do anything CPU intensive on the computer. The other projects at least give the work unit 2 weeks before making the result invalid. Is there a reason for the VERY short deadline? |

Is there a reason for the VERY short deadline? Yes - ATI GPUs calculate a workunit in 1min - 10min, depending on GPU type, gpu clock, mem clock etc. With a deadline of 2 weeks - the server will crash like it did with longer deadline in the past - it cant operate with millions of workunit in progress |

The other BIG reason, is that , the project relies on the output of the WU to generate the next WU, so a longer finish time would slow the entire project, as well as hang the server. |

It is 72 hours not 48. The deadline is to keep the searches at a better efficiency. The new wus depend on the old ones. So a short deadline is needed for better results. (One point in the begining the wu's were 10 hours due in 3 days.) Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

So, this is not a project I should be a part of until I am running all my machines with newer video cards? That's a shame. But, I understand that the project is run on limited funds and everything that you guys have said does make sense. I am going to postpone my participation until my PC's are upgraded. Thanks for the information. And keep up the work. I will see y'all later. (Hopefully soon) |

I only run a p4, no gpu card. I can do the current result in 5 hours. If you set your cache to 3+ days you will only get 1 MW wu at a time. |

I am in the same boat, was looking foward to work for M.W. but maynot be able to swing it. |

Hi, I have the same Problem. Ether my Home or my Work-PC have a ATI GPU, and on a Intel Mobile or AMD X2 one WU takes over 15-24 hours to be done. Sorry, my PC's don't run 24 hours a day. Greetings. |

@ Mitch & Thommy: Use an opti app if you aren't already. It will speed the work up. |

I also think that you need to understand a few things... You should only run as many projects as you have cpu cores. If you attempt to run say 3 projects on a single core cpu, your never going to really be as big of a benefit as running just one, or possibly two if the chip is fast. Your just absolutely killing your turn around time. If you are not running an optimized app, you're also killing your turn around time in wasting far too much time in calculations. My machine is a medium level. Q6600, twin ATI 4850's I run three projects. One on my CPU and attempting to run one each on my GPU's. Still working on getting that last bit sorted and running like I want it too. But the guys at Collatz are helping with that. |

Hi, Then this may not be the project that is ideal for you. I don't agree with the other advice of one core per project as sound as it might seem. There is no reason that you have to restrict yourself quite that much. On the other hand, project with tight deadlines can cause problems on systems with long outages or slow processors (or both). In cases like this you may need to look elsewhere and that is just a fact of life in the world of BOINC. I know, it is easy for me to say that with my embarrassment of riches ... but I was not always thus equipped. So, if MW is your dream project consider a GPU, ATI cards that work well are, ahem, reasonably priced. I got my last 4870 for about a hundred and change... current Tiger Direct is about $140 ... of course your PSU must be up to snuff. Other than that, limiting your project selection or running other projects is about your only choice ... Hope this helps ... |

I have a couple of CPU (E8200@2.66GHz) only machines at work that are attached to MW and other projects. They return a MW wu in about 3 hours at get 213 credits. If you are having trouble returning a wu in time, then install the CPU optimised application from here. And Mr Buck is correct. Sometimes you just don't have the hardware to run a particular project. I know my old P4 is now limited in what it can feasibly run. |

. Yep! I got one of those machines. :( Recently attached a P3 533MHz MMX only (No SSE so cant run opti) 1st WU estimated 80Hrs - at 64% after 48Hrs EDIT: Why did the server even bother sending the WU to this machine? Looks like it will take ~76Hrs to complete at 100% cpu 24/7. Oh Well - looks like it will have to go back to seti full time. |

Sometimes you just don't have the hardware to run a particular project. I know my old P4 is now limited in what it can feasibly run. This is true. On my 2002 laptop I had to upgrade from 512 - 1024 MB RAM just so I could run Cosmology. |

Whether we like it, or not The Truth Is Out There: counting the MW on something else than GPU is a waste of time, money and the electric energy. Let us care about the environment - count MW on GPU_only! A proud member of the Polish National Team COME VISIT US at Polish National Team FORUM |
