Hi all,

I saw on the main BOINC page that MW may soon be able to use the ATI GPUs? Is this true?

If so, great, but right now I am trying to use it on Collatz and see no evidence that Collatz is accessing it.

As I stated in their NC area, I'll post here as well:

I have the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3410 on one of my computers. Before I even try to download correct dirvers (if that is even an issue), is there anything else I need to be doing to "enable" the GPU?

(I notice when I reboot, the ATI icon shows in the lower right of the screen, in the tray, but when I mouse over it, it disappears.)

MW can only use GPU's with double precision capability. I believe yours is not capable.

How do I check that? And, if you're right, does this also explain why Collatz is not using it?

Hi Sarge,

If you check this link you will see which cards are supported

http://www.arkayn.us/milkyway/index.html

And this link shows those with double precision. Sorry yours isn't.

You should still be able to use it over at Collatz though.

I would do a uninstall of any ATI software on the machine and then install at least 9.11. Also make certain that you are running at least BOINC manager 6.10.18.

Post the first 20 lines after startup after that.

OK, so I cannot use it here on MW, but what about why I see nothing about whether Collatz is using it?

Collatz only requires single precision. So that list above (the one to Stream), if it includes your card, it will run Collatz.

The ATI page tells me I hater.ve to get the updates from the manufacturer of the computer.

When I go to that page, http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_reply.php?thread=1318&post=34647#input, the page only talks about compatibility with Windows 7. I have Windows Vista. I only got this computer a few months ago.

The 3410 is listed on the Stream SDK, I think it's Collatz compatible. Just make sure you're using BOINC Manager 6.10.18 and attach Collatz. It will auto configure, you don't need to do anything for the GPU to work, it should go all on its own.

We are also helping him over at Collatz, trying to get a compatible driver installed at the moment.

Sure, Chris, now I'm going to get all the bad advice! :P
Kidding.
Well, still no luck on Collatz and the ATI.
Building meself a small farm, though. While BOINC Manager says no usable GPUs on a 4th computer that joined the family late last week, CPU-Z tells me NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X.
Usable on MW or Collatz or not? [The first or is the inclusive or, not xor. :)]

Nope on the Gforce4, they are not CUDA capable and that is what BOINC is looking for.

I have 2 3870X2's so 4 gpu cores, however boinc and gpuz shows that only 2 gpus are being used, how can I sort this out?

Are you running in SLI mode? Should be no.

Have you extended your desktop to the other card? Required.

Do you have a dummy plug in GPU number 2? Required on Vista and Win7.

Well, as Arkayn has already said, your card is unfortunately not compatible :-(

How is the music and singing coming along, it was good last time I heard.

No new tunes in about a year. If I have more to report on that, I'll do so later, in a more appropriate area. :)

In the meantime, I will be trying to figure out what's going on with Collatz and the GPU within the next couple of days, but since this is MW, even though it's not quite the thread about it, it is my thread, so ...

Check my 4 computers. 1 has significantly lower RAC here. I'm sure I did not install the correct opti apps a few months ago or did something wrong.

From CPU-Z:

AMD Athlon(tm) Neo Processor MV-40
MMX (+), 3DNow! (+), SSE, SSE2, SSE3, x86-64

I believe that last bit says something about 54 bit.

I should have said significantly lower MW RAC on this laptop.

OK, I would post this at Collatz, but it seems their forum is down right now and I know some here are crunching there, as well.

I have made sure BOINC is not installed as a service (i.e., I left, per the default, "run as a protected application" unchecked).

I then tried to follower Slicker@SETI.USA's suggestion about making sure the hardware acceleration is set to full. (Since I am on Vista, not XP, I had to go to Control Panel > Personalization > Display Settings.)

Under the troublshooting tab, I find the following message:
"Your current display driver does not allow changes to be made to hardware acceleration settings."
