Hello,

when running gpu models does it matter how powerful the cpu chip is ?
i mean will you get the same results from the same card if you put one in an old single core amd CPU or an Intel i7 920 quad with multithreading ?

Check in BOINC Manager's preferences "Use GPU while computer is in use" and "Only after computer has been idle for ____ minutes". Status "waiting to run" indicates that the WU was started and stopped, most likely due to the settings above.

It should be the same. CPU part is estimated to be barely 0.05 (initialization and feeding data to the GPU i guess), so just focus on GPU.

I have GPU's that are all about the same which work the same in PCs with old/slow CPUs as well as even older/slower PCs. I can't comment on Intel i7 920 quad with multithreading since I don't have any, but I'm getting stacks of credits with my GPUs with the older cores that I have.

Pete,

The issue here is you are asking an "it depends" type of question expecting a yes or no answer.

If you are running just work on the GPU then probably not. Any CPU will do as well or as badly as any other. If you run multiple GPUs then a more powerful CPU may help only slightly if that is all your system is doing.

If, however, the system is fully loaded running BOINC work on the CPU and the GPU(s) then, yes, a faster/better CPU will allow you to do more work...

Real-life example was a little over a year or so ago GPU Grid's application took nearly a full core to support the GPU ... sort of like the application at Einstein does right now ... so, my i7 system supporting 4 GPUs used nearly one "core" to support all 4 GPU cores I had on that system... my Q9300 also lost almost a full core but only supported one GPU ...

Bottom line? The i7 was far more efficient in handling the threads that supported the GPUs than a straight quad core...
