My son just finished his new system build and wants his ATI-5850 card back. I borrowed it while he was waiting for the rest of his stuff. Anyway, I am fixing to lose 130,000 credits a day and was looking for a replacement card that can fit into a motherboard like this one

There is only 6.5 inches of space available and the ZOTAC GTS-250 is exactly 6.2 inches (157mm) I think that is a 2/3 length fit.

I have 2 more of those $14 motherboards.

I spent an hour or 2 looking at images at newegg and then at the manufactures web site checking spec-size and cannot find an ATI card that is small enough.

These are the ones I looked up
ATI HD Radeon 5970 (credits to kashi)
ATI HD Radeon 5870
ATI HD Radeon 5850
ATI HD Radeon 4890
ATI HD Radeon 4870
ATI HD Radeon 4850
ATI HD Radeon 4770
ATI HD Radeon 4830
ATI HD Radeon 38x0

I got them from the bottom of this thread.

Forget the 5970, 5870 NO way.

The 4770 is a good price/size fit for that board IMHO.

Thanks

I remeasured the existing card (gts-250) and it is 7.5 inches not 6.5. There is room for 196mm (7.7in) but any more would hit the cpu locking lever.

I am looking for an ati 4770 that is that size but that product seems discontinued. Diamond, sku 4770PE5512, shows a card about that size, but the spec lists 11.5 inches, totally wrong if the photo is right. The box it comes in is also listed at 11.5in so obviously they have it wrong.

[EDIT]

that diamond 4770 is 8.5 inches according to ebay message from this seller which make it an inch too long.

I didn't realize the lengths were even different.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

I measured one of my gt240's and it is 6.8 inches.

I measured one of my hd4770's and it was 8.25 inches. The PCI-E power plug extends further, but it would be above your heat sink. Not that it matters as the baseboard alone won't fit.

Full size cards are a pain in many cases when they run into the hard drives. The OP's motherboard is exceptionally crowded. Shorter cards are popular.

Have you considered using a riser? It does add to the cost, but this place offers a number of alternate ways to mount a video card to that slot. ( disclaimer, google found them, I have never bought from them.. )

Why don't you just buy that same card your son has?

Why not buy your son a replacement card?

Better than the one you have so he does not feel cheated ...

Unless he has the same MB ...

Just one way to find out installing it now.

HD4770 thats like standing still while a HD5770 does a moonwalk over it.

I wonder why the HD5770 isn't on the supported GPU list then :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

HD5770 says it does not do dp.
But like allways i dis agree with my hardware.
I pay for it so it does what i tell it to do.
I know the Terrascale2 GPU knows DP.
Will find out working on bios.
ah well now i am here might as well get my RAC up a lil....

Ok I looked on the list, It's real shame though as the 5850 is almost twice as much as a 5770 card.
