Quite apart from 'shifties', some of the explanation may be due to chip yields.
SemiAccurate has been quite vocal on this subject for 6 months or more:

Cheers,

Message 38700 - Posted: 14 Apr 2010, 2:12:17 UTC - in response to Message 38378.

In an effort to increase the sales of their Tesla C2050 and Tesla C2070 cards, Nvidia has intentionally crippled the FP64 compute ability by a whopping 75%. If left alone, the GTX 480 would have performed FP64 at 672.708 GFLOPS, almost 119 GFLOPS more than ATI's 5870. Instead, the GTX 480 comes in at 168.177 GFLOPS. Here is a link to Nvidia's own forum where we have been discussing this. You will see there is also a CUDA-Z performance screenshot confirming it, on top of the confirmation by Nvidia's own staff. Nvidia is not publically making anyone aware that this is the case. Anandtech also snuck the update onto page 6 of a 20 page review of the GTX 480/470.

Is anyone besides Me receiving a 401.1 error on trying to go to the Nvidia forum?

Yes, I am getting the same, but only from one ISP I use. From the other, everything is fine.

I'm on DSL Extreme(My ISP), Nvidia's forum seems to be there, I'll have to call DSL Extreme Tech Support in the morning.

Those who truly need the additional double precision will buy the professional card. Those who don't won't.

Maybe they think twice and order instead FIVE Raedon 5870
each with the same DP performence and for the same price as a
SINGLE Fermi Tesla.

That is certainly a viable alternative, and for some people it will be the right choice (and that probably includes the majority of people here). But for others it won't be feasible, for a variety of reasons.

I looked at the prices of the HD 5870 on Amazon, The prices range from about $400 to about $500 before shipping, So the cost is not that low, While a HD 5770 costs around $150-$200 before shipping.

The 5770 can't do MW, and the original post the (top) above was a response to was comparing to the "professional" card,

Those who truly need the additional double precision will buy the professional card. Those who don't won't.

Based on the quote, the poster is referring to the Tesla card, which goes for $2499 retail, so that's about 5 HD 5870s...

Ok, I stand corrected. So if a 5770 won't do MW, What will?

ATI's HD 3850, 3870, 4850, 4870, 4890, 5850, 5870.

The 5830 does Double Precision as is listed Here. So technically It should be able to do MW and other projects that need DP as It does have 1120 Stream Processors.

Correct, I'm using a 5830, also the 4770 can do MW, too. I have a couple of those also doing MW.

I am using a 5830 as well, I have also seen someone using a 4730 on Milkyway as well.

Right now the card that I bought for $250 is selling for $240+free shipping+$15 rebate at Sapphire 5830 @ newegg.

Newegg is nice and all, But I'll stick to Amazon where a 5830 can be had for at least $239.99 + $4.74 shipping or $244.73 to My address. :D

It's one of Lists there and I would like to get 3 of them too, But not now, Maybe if the house sells or If I can't get a mortgage cause of My small income in February 2011.

Yep, since Newegg is based in California, you have to pay tax.

I don't since I am across the border in Arizona.

And of course Amazon is not based in California.

And the FTB hates that(Franchise Tax Board), Too bad, So sad(not), Sales Tax across a state line is only allowed if the place has a physical presence in said state I once read and Amazon doesn't, Of course most retailers there may or may not be in California, Once an item is in the cart one can tell if It's taxable or not, I kick as little back to CA as possible as they've taken almost as much as they legally can.

you're right. If you read the topic about GPU requirements you will see that I suggested some updates but they weren't catched up.
