I'll keep my fingers crossed and I'll let you know the results on my end as soon as I can (about 20 hrs). I hope I'm not causing you any undue trouble with this problem. I suspect that if this this happens on my machine, it affects others with similar setups, too. If there is anything else I can do to help, please let me know. I'd abort what you're running right now so you get the new application. It should work. |

The same kind of thing is still happening. I had two work units complete and report as successful but when they tried to validate against ati13 cards the discrepancy between results was apparently too large and the unit was sent out again to another machine (running ati13) and, of course, the ati13 results validated against each other. Is it possible that a core duo (not a core 2 duo) is not capable enough to do the required degree of precision needed to match the results of the newer processors? Maybe it should be excluded from the list of acceptable setups (much as the PPC machines have been) since the amount of useful work must be minimal (it takes me 20 hrs to do what ati13 cards can do in 5 minutes). The time you have put in to try to get this to work could probably be better spent on other, more productive tasks. I would like to continue to help with the project, but if my machine just won't cut it then I understand. Technology moves on. @Paris: If it's any consolation to you I have one WU which ended normally and has been marked invalid and three others which look like they will go that way as they don't agree with the other result on the same WU... ;) I am still running WUs as I hope this will help Travis fix the problem.... The alternative explanation is that Macs can't do sums... :-o http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=111972 Here are the version details for this machine: Mac OS X 10.6.3 (Core Duo 2.8GHz), BOINC Client v6.10.51 and Milkyway v0.29 (am also running Collatz on Cuda v3.0.14 driver on the NVIDIA 9600M GT but this should have nothing to do with it.... ;) |

Okay, aborting that task that I just got then. |

Okay, aborting that task that I just got then. Don't do that, my fix will be on the server side. |

Been updated, let me know if you're getting credit. One came in just now - got credit OK. http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/result.php?resultid=119291520 App. Version is: Milkyway v0.29 - was there a mod to the app ? |

No joy here. I just sent in two more units that were marked as a successful finish and they did not validate against the usual suspects (ati13). I will continue to run until I'm told that either no fix will be forthcoming or until things start to work. @ PinkPenguin: thank you for the attempt at consolation - "misery loves company" - it helps to know that I'm not in the boat alone. Like you I will keep on in case it will help solve the problem. I can only hope that the problem does not involve "Macs can't do sums" Plus SETI Classic = 21,082 WUs |

I will continue to run until I'm told that either no fix will be forthcoming or until things start to work. Made another update to the server side code -- saw a case where the OS X results could go through and not be granted credit (even though they should be). So I'm hoping this should be the last nail in the coffin for the issue (at least for the time being). |

[edit]Sorry Travis.... probably driving you up the wall with this one...[/edit] Although some WUs go through OK it looks like I am still getting invalid WUs with non clear idea of why as they seem to complete normally. Seems a bit chancy whether the WU comes in valid or not. This example came in this morning: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=104342224 This is against two ATI Cards on 64-bit Windows 7 machines: 1. CAL ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 (RV740/RV770) (512MB) driver: 1.4.556 2. CAL ATI Radeon HD5800 series (Cypress) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.556 My machine is (hostid=111972): Mac Book Pro 2.8Ghz (dual-core) with Mac OS X 10.6.3 and BOINC Client 6.10.51. It is running the 64-bit v0.29 MW app with the following output: <search_application> stock_osx_x86_64: 0.29 double </search_application> ... Do Macs have problems with sums :-? |

Another pair of workunits went through with successful outcomes but each failed to validate. This time one was outvoted by a pair of ati13 cards while the other lost out to one ati13 and an anonymous platform. Frustration mounts (probably for you, too) as time passes. It seems to happen on all WUs which require a consensus. The following WU didn't agree with an ATI result and is waiting on a Cuda result in order to decide which is valid (given past results my bet is on the ATI card.... curses, foiled again!): http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/workunit.php?wuid=104606076 In this case both wingmen are Windows and the ATI is a Windows 7 64-bit system running MW v0.23 and the Cuda23 is a Windows Vista 32-bit system running v0.24.... Mine hasn't changed... though it is looking at me reproachfully. ... Not sure how "consensus" works on the MW system - it looks like every WU unit goes out once and, presumably on the basis of some criteria in the result (i.e. "found something interesting", the same WU is sent to another PC for verification. If the second PC agrees with the first the WU is OK if not a third WU is sent out and decides which of the first two is the winner.... (if all three disagree Travis has found his dumb alien.... but I ain't seen that yet... ;) The problem is that when my MAC sends in a single response and there is no second WU the WU is validated and credits are awarded. Every time the MAC gets a WU which is also run by other PCs the MAC is invariably (as far as I can see) wrong.... this means that single WU results (which are not checked against a second result because they don't find anything worth checking) are probably also wrong! This makes the results returned my Macs on the v0.29 app unreliable... even when they are awarded credits (not that I'm complaining I don't mind being awarded credits for being wrong.... I usually am). |

@PinkPenguin: I think you have pretty much hit the nail on the head as far as how the validation procedures work (although I have seen it take as many as four returns to get a consensus - mine, an anonymous platform and an ati13 which finally was matched by a second ati13. [tongue-in-cheek] I think that, since we are running stock apps on stock machines with CPUs only, our outcomes are the correct ones and that the others are merely agreeing on false results - much like the old joke about the doting momma commenting on her son's performance in the marching band: "Everyone was out of step but my Johnny." [/tongue-in-cheek] Except for a fluke (see post several spots above) I haven't even picked up the non-paired credits. It would be nice if I could get something for my efforts but I will hang on for at least some time yet. Keep on keeping-on. :-) Plus SETI Classic = 21,082 WUs |

@Paris - yep, I think you're right... can't see how the other boxes could've got it right ! Anyhow I have to switch to Rosetta for a week and then I'll be back to see if there's been any developments.... meantime I'll run through the rest of the queue in the hope that the rest of the world admits it's mistake... ;) |

I just noticed I have the same problem, but on Win 7 x64. I run MilkyWay on a HD 5850 and each time I suspend and resume a WU, the WU gets restarted. Is this behaviour intentional? Its no big problem, I only lose a minute or two, just curious. |
