I'm seeing lots of errors on my new 5970. Thought it might have been something to do with using an old optimised app so I renamed my app_info file and let BOINC download the latest app and there is still errors.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/results.php?hostid=154949&offset=0&show_names=0&state=4

It's not consistent on which GPU the errors are occurring. Not seeing this on my 4870 in the same machine. I increased the fan speed a bit (man it's noisy) with no change (temp did drop a little). Increased the frequency from stock with no change. Any ideas?

As a guess, it is possible you are a bit short of memory to run both a HD 5970 and a HD 4870 on Windows 7. This has happened a number of times in the past with people running multiple video cards both here and at Collatz.

You could try removing the HD 4870 or installing more memory and see what happens.

Probably wouldn't help fix the errors but reducing your memory speed to 500 MHz or less may help decrease the temperature and result in a lower fan speed and less noise.

The old optimized app would have given you some erros on that card. Keep using either the standard project or the latest optimized one.

Try pulling the 4870 and let the new 5970 play by itself for a quick test run. If the errors persist, there may be something wrong with the card. How are your temps?

The 5970 is definitely stable on the app, so that points to hardware. On that angle I would immediately suspect temperature and power. Noting your experience already with the beasts, temp is probably sorted as such. CPU effect will be to render the machine partially cpu bound as the 5970 at full tilt needs a hefty i7 to stop that, however, that effect should be relatively minor for yours, and would only be a slowdown(ish) not error generator

That leaves power which is often a hidden 'gotcha' - from downclocking cpus to downclocking gpus to downstepping PSUs all of which will happen automatically when needed in the background.

As you did not get hassle before, I would suspect the additional power draw of the 5970 has tipped you over - like all top end cards these days the beast is power hungry, albeit much better than NVidia's offerings.

That could all be tosh, because I donot know your PSU, but its certainly suspect when you get wierd errors. Whilst there is no overclock at present, the power draw gets high when overvolting, so good to note that when evaluating the power draw needs for the future.

Couple of articles that may help as they go through power aspects as part of the articles:

Guru3d Overclock Outline 5970

Guru3d Review 5970 & 5970 Crossfire

EDIT: Just had another look, saw its running now, ecellent:) A suggestion, reduce the memory to as low as you can set it, at present both cards are at stock, memory bandwidth is not relevant for these apps, keeping it high wastes power, pumps heat, and reduces headroom for overclocking later

better to delete all (detach & reattach), because some files already present your milkyway folder do not get updated (brook.dll) and they were updated too to remove these errors on the new ati cards!

Many thanks for the great replies.

Temps are OK.

GPU1 = 60°C
GPU2 = 70°C

(as I mentioned in another thread I really think ATI got their cooling solution a little half-arsed on this card)

I've detached and reatached. Saw the download of brook64a_ati.dll (forgot that this was also needed to overcome the original error issue with 5970's). Looking forwar to seeing how it goes now. If no success I'll remove the 4870 and see how it goes.

Your GPU seems to be producing OK results now, and I see your RAC has risen marginally. Perhaps things are heading for the hills now?

5970s are built to run hotter - 80-85 is the norm, and happily purr away at that temp - it can hit 90 on overclock, but the fan will pull it back if needed (I usually do - hate that number for cards!). Its only if it hits a constant 100 that alarm bells should ring. I usually have mine about 82/83, its fine.

Its a notable aspect because past use by many of other cards ingrains a "norm" of 60/65, the fan gets wacked high and earplugs come out to force it down from the 80s. Unless being done for other reasons, there is no need for the sake of the card itself, its fine in the 80s

Hehehe...he was catching me, albiet more slowly of late (since the upgrade to win7 appears to have made my main cruncher more stable). But now.....

Glad you've got it fixed.

I've decided to join the ranks of 5970 crunchers myself. Ordered a HIS brand last night, AU price has come down a bit lately.

Also have an Xtreme 5970 cooler currently sitting in FedEx depot in Sydney. Never had anything delivered by FedEx before, instead of Hong Kong-Sydney, it went Hong Kong-Canton-Samutprakarn-Sydney. Tracking the shipping and seeing it staying in these different depots for so long does not inspire confidence. It cleared customs in Sydney at 10 am Thursday morning so I should get it Monday or Tuesday next week if FedEx deign to pull their finger out. Tried to time 3 different deliveries to all arrive on the same day but with the vagaries of domestic and international freight my cunning plan will probably be as effective as one proposed by Baldrick.

Get a bonus Arctic Cooling rugby shirt, never heard of that team but apparently they have a lot of fans. :)

By taking the GPU cores to 785 MHz the wu times start to fall below 3 figures (just - but I've now seen some longer wu's taking a whole 3 seconds longer on the 5970 which has pushed it above 3 figures again). With the 5870 clocked at 850 MHz, my next increase is to 800MHz before I start to even think about increasing the voltage.

Kashi, mine is also a HIS purchased from MSY. Nice joke as well....

The problem with the Xtreme 5970 cooler is it appears to take up an extra 2 or 3 slots, so the card will take up 4 or 5 slots - not so bad if that's the only card in your case, but not so good for multi-card set ups. Plus it just pushes the air into the case and not out, so you then have to get the hot air out of the case as well. Love to know how you get on.

With the stock cooler and fan running at 50% the noise is bearable - any higher and it starts to get too noticeable. Temps are a reasonable 60°C to 70°C (GPU1/GPU2). At 60% you may as well start wearing ear plugs and at 100% it's quiter putting your house at the end of runway. Glad it's currently moving into the cooler time of year!

No msy near me. I am getting mine from Stonebridge.

Yes I know fitting Extreme 5970 results in GPU 3 slots thick but I will move my 5870 to another computer I haven't been using recently. So only one card in each computer, any more and the power bill would be even higher.

Case I leave open both sides because it is an old Lian Li with only 3 little fans and the other case will not fit a 5970. I'm just hoping the Extreme 5970 is a bit quieter, because my Vapor-X 5870 is a noisy beast.

You are correct though, a reference cooler model that exhausts out of the case is preferable for multiple cards especially when they are close together. Reference cooler probably also better for a single card in a closed case unless the case has very good airflow.

I've been using open cases for years now since the houses I have been living in recently are very hot in summer. I even use a box fan on the floor blowing into the case when the weather is hot.

Xtreme 5970 was just an impulse buy really, because I had a Twin Turbo Pro on my 4890 and it was virtually silent. So much nicer for sleeping than the whining sound of most current high range GPUs at full crunch.

Wow - what a beast of a card.

Now running the 5970 at 850/1000MHz with a small voltage increase to 1.075V. Fan at 55% (bearable). Temps 65°C & 74°C. Punching out the wu's pretty much sub 90 seconds now on stock client - no app_info.xml - GPU usage ~97%.

I'll connect the Kill-o-watt meter and see what this machine is pulling tonight. I was at around 400w with the 4850 and 4870 and Q9450 all firing. It'll be interesting to see what it will be...any guesses? (Q9450/4870/5970)

Sounds good. Received mine a few days ago. Will try turning the fan up later. I thought it was making a loud rattling noise when the fan increased in speed but discovered it was my motherboard tray rattling from the vibration. Without the rattle, it's much quieter than my Vapor-X 5870 but that runs at a much higher auto fan speed and a much cooler temperature.

Now running some Collatz at 750/1000, fan varies between 30-38%, temp is about 77-80°C, GPU usage 95-99%, about 400 seconds per task, anonymous with parameters.

Did some MilkyWay when I first got it. Running 735/500, GPU usage 99%, same temps and fan as Collatz, about 100 seconds per task, anonymous with parameters.

Tried DNETC but tasks locked up, some are lucky or more knowledgeable than me but it won't run on my configuration. Multiple cards aren't so bad, it seems to be duals that more commonly have trouble there. Shame really as I like to support all the ATI projects seeing as there are only 3.

Can't turn off the monitor or everything stops and second core "disappears" or get a screen freeze requiring a reboot. Tried many different configurations of cables. Went to get resistors to make some dummy plugs but Tandy has closed in my town, so will go to Jaycar on Monday.

Certainly pumps out a lot of work even at close to default clock, pumps out a lot of heat too, good on these cold nights and bonus sauna next summer.:)

Wow - what a beast of a card.......I'll connect the Kill-o-watt meter and see what this machine is pulling tonight.

When I started mine up, it opened my eyes to what I had been missing :) I'd be interested in those power figures if you could be kind enough to post them. I've been relying on extrapolating review figures up to now. I need to get one of those meters, had never twigged the real need until this beast started up.

..... Certainly pumps out a lot of work even at close to default clock, pumps out a lot of heat too, good on these cold nights ......

It took two days, then the cat realised, and from then on it used to settle down in the study with me on late nights, happily purring away. My 5970 is on an overvolt - get no better recommendation on heating than a Cat! .... She died a couple of weeks ago though, poor 'ol thing, kidney failure did for her in the end (kidney failure's a Cat classic as cause of death) she'd been a great family companion. Still, she was 22 years old, so had done well - ATI gave her a warm last few weeks:)

..... It'll be interesting to see what it will be...any guesses? (Q9450/4870/5970) ......

My money's on 300w idle, and either side of 850w if all cores and gpus are going full stretch. Going to be on the high side as the 5970 will drink it on overvolt, the 5970 alone will probably be around 330w at that overvolt at full stretch

Power usage with 5970 @ 876/1000MHz & 4870 @ 801/900MHz on MW with 1 WU per GPU and Q9450 @ 2.66GHz running Aqua = 608W to 625W.

Idle = 245W with the 5970 fan at 40%.

At full load before the card has warmed up, so the fan is still at 40%, the power draw was 580W.

As the card temps leveled out at 67°C & 76°C, my fan profile has the fan running at 56% and the power draw is back to 608 to 625W. Glad my PSU is 850W.

Wow, the power bill is going to be BIG, BIG!

Interesting ..... bit less than I thought which is good news, many thanks for the time and trouble to post it.

The power bill certainly goes up, my electicity meter gets dizzy !! (and I only run a 5970, not the addition you do) "No such thing as a free lunch" as they say.

The other good news from where I sit is you are verifying what many reviews have said - load up a machine with the card(s) if there is a heafty CPU to service the cards, more power efficient than one per beast.

Now the $64,000 question, its claimed in many reviews that the 5970 at full stretch, full overvolt, all guns blazing will draw a wopping 420w - balanced off of course by the massive work output at that level. I have not had the courage to find out - not had a meter anyway (!). If you go that far would be good to see what you find.

I'll be slowly increasing the OC, but I'd have to remove the 4870 to truly push the 5970 and get meaningful power draw levels. I'll post a few incremental power draw increases as I OC further. What I haven't posted is the stock power draw which I'll get around to.
