I have been using BOINC 6.10.52 with Catalyst 10.3 on Windows 7 x64 and for the last two days, my system gets stuck if and if crossfire x is enabled.

First i thought there was something with crossfire bridge but desptie i changed it, system kept to get stuck.

The stuck appears at the exact time four wus initiate and only reset button solves it. Different versions of Catalyst doesn't solve the problem either. Any ideas?

It does happen in DNETC@Home also. Only when crossfireX is enabled, boinc 6.10.18 gives error and shutdown. On every case, including the previous post, only one project is running.

Have you ever updated or reduced your driver without any problems? I'm thinking the problem might be an overheat on NB or a corrupted DLL.

I wish. I have problems every time. I normally, strip the current drivers out, then install the new ones. Then it doesn't work, so I rollback and redo several times tweeking as I go.

Except for the fact I can't run Collatz in this configuration (crossfire) I am pretty happy.

Cheers

I just formatted the system and despite brand new drivers, it gets locked up as soon as four wus run simultaneously.

BOINC 6.10.18 and Catalyst 10.4 didn't work either.

formatted the system? are the cards working, otherwise? check with david, boinc version he uses. I am interested as well soon to be running crossfire, but with 5870s. I just read in another very current thread some grumblings about memory leaks and gpu issues with the recent boinc versions.

Cards were working; but recently crossfirex gave issues. My recent tests show the second core of second card which is the latest in the system has been malfunctioned. It is not a BOINC, as i have tested the latest stable version including the development version of BOINC, nor a Catalyst issue as i also tested ranges from 9.12 through 10.4.

I even tried different crossfire bridges and cooled environments. Now, it's pretty clear that there is a hardware issue here. (stock speeds)

NOTE: I haven't encountered any problem in crossfire of 5870's with latest BOINC versions from 6.10.45 to the latest 6.10.53 versions. They work ok. I was talking about my 5970

You are correct, but those issues seem to be fixed in the newest alpha.

That being said.. Why is this guy using an alpha client?

Its a Windows 7 and Vista memory management issue that will not let you run more than 3 GPU's at a time I believe.

It seems that there are issues with the second gpu of a 5970 giving incorrect
results. See this thread on the AMD OpenCL forum, note the response of the
AMD guy:

I'm crunching MilkyWay with the following config. without "problems":

* AMD Phenom II X4 965 @ 3.4Ghz
* 2 x 2GB Corsair Dominator (1600Mhz)
* XFX ATI HD5970 in CrossfireX with XFX ATI HD5870
Both at default clock/mem speeds)
* Win7 Ultimate x64
* Catalyst 10.4
* BOINC 6.10.18

BUT, my times had raised from 1:40min p/WU on a "single" HD5970 to 2:30min p/WU on the CrossfireX with a HD5870. But I'm still able to crunch on the 3 GPU's. And every now and then some WU's finish on the 1:40 barrier.

Sadly enough this is the only project I can crunch, because when I activate the CrossfireX, Collatz starts 3 WU's and inmediately halt everything (even the mouse) and DNETC runs 1 WU's with 3 cores for about a minute, and then miserably fail with a "compute error" on each and every WU.

By the way, I don't think this could be a Windows issue, because the exact same description for each projects applies when I tried WinXP-Pro-64 SP2

So, what I experience don't seem to be in acordance with what others are experiencing, and I don't know where to continue trying to get up the other projects.

Finaly, this applies no matter I'm running or not a CPU project. (AQUA)

Easy solution, don't run in crossfire mode.

Ensure you expand your desktop to the other displays or use a dummy plug on the ones not connected to a display.

I have a 5970 with a 4870 in my box, running with no problems. 2 wu's per GPU. 80 sec equivalent per wu on the 5970 and 190 sec on the 4870.

Running Collatz is no problem..not even going to go there with DNETC, I think it wouldn't like mixing the 5970 and 4870.

Let me understand this...

Are you saying crossfirex is not necessary for the other ATI card (the HD5870) to get detected??

Because, without crossfirex the "Device" section of Windows still detect every card (displaying 3 GPU's), but BOINC only reports 2 GPU's (the ones at HD5970).

Is that what the dummy plugs are for? I don't know any. Or is it just a plug without monitor?

I'll try what you recomend, because that way I could use my 1st and 3rd PCI-e slot (and not the 1st and 2nd) to make more space between cards. (I couldn't do it because of the size of the crossfirex bridge)

Thanks for the input!

Does anyone recomends based on facts to upgrade BOINC from 6.10.18?

I run twin 5970's in crossfire mode, and it is impossible to run Collatz in this mode, except by running one WU at a time.

Take the bridge away, turn crossfire mode off.

Make sure you have a monitor, or dummy plug for each card.
(Mostly I use the VGA adapter into the second monitor port, the monitor does not need to be active for this to work).

Go into windows and set the desktop across all cards

Restart BOINC.

hi,

i run 3 cards have run them in x-fire and not with no dummy plugs or seperate monitors or anything they just work ......... but

i think i may have the same problem you have with the machine grinding to a halt with collatz to which nobody has an answer apart from windows 7 having a problem of some sort

i'm just wondering in my case and maybe yours if this is not a power issue
my cards use around 260 watts plus on full load i'm also using an intel i7 920 clocked at 4 gig which might be around the 150 watt mark all on its own
that totals conservitivly around 900 to 950 watts and i use a corsair 950 watt power supply

so maybe i'm using even more than i think maybe closer to 300 watts per card on full tilt in that case were well over the corsairs happy zone

i'm going to try taking a card out of the system just incase its power supply related and thought i'd mention it to you incase maybe you were overunning the power supply you have without knowing it

best regards
Ian

So if I was to use a dummy plug with my 5970 and 5870 I would just connect one card and put a dummy plug on the other? I don't need a dummy plug on the second DVI connector of 5970 as well to stop the second core going to sleep?

I managed to get both GPUs recognised by BOINC by attaching them both to the one monitor, but the second core of the 5970 tended to go to sleep. I attached another cable so now I have DVI, displayport and VGA connections and that fixed that issue. I can run Milkyway and Collatz with no problems like this, DNETC the tasks freeze. However if I turn the monitor off everything stops working.

Still haven't managed to get any resistors to make a dummy plug, but I have a long crossfire bridge so I will try using that. At least MilkyWay may work then with the monitor turned off.

I was going to put one card in another computer but when I read some posts here and realised how much power I was using I quickly cancelled that plan. Now I've been looking for some low power CPUs. Spotted some suitable low power 32nm Xeon 5600 series L versions, but the price is high, availability probably poor in Australia and don't know if my motherboard would support them properly, since uncore speed needs to be X1.5 instead of X2 or something like that.

Seems to me when I was running Dual Sapphire 4850 X2 Cards together I had Attach one card to a Monitor & then had to run 3 Dummy Plugs to get all 4 Cores to work. I also had to use the CCC Display Manager to Enable the 3 Dummy Plugged Cores.
