ok i'm new to milkyway and was looking for help installing a new app. Ive searched the forums but im only able to find info for linux.

anyway my cpu is capable of sse 4.1 so i was trying to find something suitable. I found a few optimized apps but every time i try to install them something goes wrong. I follow the directions in the readme but generally heres what happens.

for the sse 4.1 app after following directions given and doing a restart after copying files, milkyway simply wont get any new work, not even for my gpu.

i then tried the sse 3 app, and after the same procedure, boinc will only get 2 WUs at a time for my cpu even though i have a quad core. It still wont get gpu work however.

the apps are from planet3dnow by gipsel. if anyone could offer advice it would be very helpful.

The files are unzipped right? Are you shutting Boinc down completely and then installing the files?
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

I think if you are using an app_info.xml file you can only get work for the application that is included in it. Not for both CPU and GPU. The application that is not in the app_info.xml file will be discarded when BOINC starts.

Tasks take much longer to run on the CPU compared to a GPU, to receive 4 CPU tasks instead of only 2 you may need to increase your cache setting. This is called "Additional work buffer" in my version of BOINC or "Maintain enough work for an additional" in your BOINC preferences on a project website.

to banditwolf, I was doing the "shut down connected client" command then closing boinc and putting the files where the readme said. and yea i extracted them with winrar first.

also ill try the additional work buffer thing online, i just wish that the sse 4.1 app would work also.

and do you guys think there is a way to modify the .xml file with something to also receive gpu work?

sorry if these questions are dumb, its just i used to use seti where a unified installer was made so all you had to do was select your processors sse features and whether or not you had a gpu capable of doing work and everything was done for you. guess that kinda made me a bit lazy.
