Hello !

This weekend one day from an other my graphics card become extremly quiet. First I didnt cared about it, my room is cooler than usually because of bad weather. Generally its 25-27 C in my room and my gpu operating on 90-93 C. Now its 20 C what is cold, cause summer is there, so first I tought this causing my fan to slow. But when I entered ati catalist I've seen my gpu now operating 107 C and the fan cannot go any faster. Is it possible that milkyway damaged my graphics card ? Ati says my fan going on 98% but it seems not true because full speed must be much louder. I dont think that dust or anything can be decrese the speed of the fan so dramaticly.

I suspended the project for awhile, till I can figure out what causing this problem. I also reinstalled al sowftware including windows, so its some hardware problem. If you have any ideas please tell me.

Perhaps try modifying fan speed with RivaTuner?

Normally a fan has four coils, soldered on an little print. If one coil looses contact due to permanent high temp, it cannot run at full speed. Sometimes this can be repaired simpli by resoldering the coils.
Can you try to attach 12V direct to the fan (unplug it from the graphic card!) and check that it runs at full speed. If not, the fan is bad. If yes, you might have a problem with the fan control. You could install an external controller then.
If your card produces correct results, the logic part of the card is OK.
Do you have a possibility to read out the fan's rpm, not the % ? We could compare this with the readouts of other cards.

I agree with the others, most likely you have a bad/faulty fan. Confirm actual RPM (not percentage) using GPU-Z or HWMonitor or any number of free monitoring tools and see what they say.

If fans show at 100% but RPM less than 3-5K or less than normal then you have a faulty fan.

As to whether MilyWay damaged your GPU, I would have to say no. There are any number of reasons a piece of computer hardware can fail.

Or maybe ZERO rpm ????

Maybe somebody else who knows more could comment?

Milkyway didn't harm your Fan, you harmed your Fan running Milkyway 24/7 if that's what your running it ... If I remember correctly my 48xx Cards showed a RPM, I know earlier ATI Cards I had showed an RPM & my 58xx Cards show some RPM so I don't see why the 48xx Series of Cards wouldn't. He can't just look & see if the Fan is turning or stick his finger on the center of the Fan to feel if it's turning, I do that all the time.

With the Temp's at 100*c I would say the card is no good, my Box's will Reboot if the Video Card Temp reaches around 100*c ...

Apparently it was still producing valid results just a day or two ago when temps were already this high. You don't think maybe just the fan could be replaced? How hard is it to find replacement fans in general?

Then again, card may still be under warranty ... so ....

They will do that, I've had to RMA 5 58xx Cards already for Fan Noise or Failure & they were still producing good results up to the Point they Failed completely. I've replaced the Fan on some older ATI & NVIDIA Cards but have never attempted it on the 48xx or 58xx Cards, not even sure you can get a Fan for them. He never did say what Brand or Model of Card he has, if he does some Goggling he should be able to tell if the Fan is replaceable.

If he's the Original Owner it could be under Warranty yet as long as he has the Sales Slip yet. They almost always require a Sales Slip to prove your the original owner of the Card except for XFX Cards which have a Double Lifetime Warranty.

An open face design probably would be easier to replace than a closed face one. I know they make aftermarkets coolers for the 48xx & 58xx Cards so he should be able to come up with something to fix it if it is the Fan gone bad ...

Hi,
i checked it right now on my main system.
My 4850 shows no fan rpm, my 5830 does. For referenz: Temps 63 .. 66deg, fan 1654 rpm @ 41% , gpu-load 97%.

My fan is runnin, I already checked it, even turning into higher speed when got some load, the real problem is, its not running its full speed, and I can even hear it, because it was the louder piece in my comp anyway, for some reason its lost the full capacity. But according to your posts, even 83-93 C wasnt normal.

Well thats serius, because actually I was looking around before I started crouch to milky way, and the staff says they didnt heard ever that any boinc project caused damage to the hardware. Well I still think that my fan should not give away so soon, I've joined on feb 10, and others running more hardly without problems. Anyway, I only remember 1 week contunus crounching, other times I suspended the project time by time.

My both cards do get some help: there are 2 12cm case-fans, blowing directly from the side to the graphic-cards. The 4850 is now running for ~one year and the 5830 for ~6 months. I've seen its necessary to remove dust from time to time.
4850: Core-clock 750MHz, GPU-Temp 84deg, fan 64%, GPU-load 99%, rpm not reported
5830: Core-clock 800MHz, GPU-Temp 62deg, fan 41%, GPU-load 98%, rpm 1652

It's not necessarily the Projects that Harm you Hardware, it's running your Hardware 24/7 that eventually finds any weak links in your Hardware. All My Video Cards are the 58xx Type, I have had to RMA 6 of them already in less than 7 Month's for Fan Failure. I don't blame any of the GPU Projects for the Fan's failing, I just consider it part of running the projects 24/7. Apparently the Fan's on the 58xx Series Cards is the weak Link ...
