i'm running 6.10.18 and not 6.10.56 is that whats making this trick not work ? You can always use the No New Tasks (NNT) option in the BOINC Manager. :D |

Where's the 64 bit of this version of BOINC? All Versions List contains all the versions sorted most recent on top. Note that the latest recommended is 6.10.56 not .57 ... |

Hello, managed to get that version downloaded and installed now can you please tell me where you set it to back up project work as i've been all through the preferances and its exactly the same as you get on your project server preferance page no extra controls on how the work is allocated etc Best regards Ian ....Please Join team Scotland HERE |

I'm not sure if we mean the same thing: I meant to have an extra project as backup attached, but not running as long as MilkyWay has work. When there is no work for MilkyWay, BOINC will ask for work from the backup project. You do this by going to the project you want to use as backup and go to "Preferences for this project". There you set the resource share to zero. That works for me. Also note that you should not set "Maintain enough work for an additional" under "Computing preferences" too high, otherwise it will ask for too much work from the backup project. I have mine set to 0.05 days (1.2 hours), I can run 24 WUs from Milkyway in under an hour, so no point in maintaining more work (as MW does not give out more). |

Speaking of default projects, and not to drop hints or anything; but in the next week or so dnahome.cs.rpi.edu should be up and running. So if you want to help cure tuberculosis... This humble moderator has been slaving away pretty hard getting that crazy biology code boincified :) That project will also be much more CPU friendly, as I don't think we'll be able to get the crazy performance improvements from using GPUs given what it's doing. And what it will be doing is really awesome -- examining entire DNA sequences for protein binding sites so we can figure out how proteins interact with different species. And on a completely unrelated note, I've gotten the nbody simulation code from another one of our astronomers here. And in a month or so we should have a single-precision GPU friendly application that will simulate the interactions between the milky way and other dwarf galaxies, which will be REALLY cool. ssh tho. it's all secret. ... but not really :) |

We can finally crunch milkyway using our low end gpus (when that time comes). :) |

Hi, nice one Travis I know some more people that will be interested in the biological project that dont feel an interest in the astrophysics domain thank you for the instructions on how to set up the manager still wondering how the manager knows to stop all work on collatz ( or the new project ) when milkyway does send new work and what happens if the collatz wu get out of date before worked on wont they just fail to complete and waste time being crunched ? best regards Ian ....Please Join team Scotland HERE |

BOINC will periodically contact the project, so it will know when MW has new work available. But when MW has new work available, it will still finish all work that was requested from the backup project before returning to MW, thats why I said to not maintain too much work. |

Interesting... I had thought it was impossible to obtain the same calculation accuracy with single precision FP? I'm no programmer though. Is it some programming trickery or a complete redesign that doesn't need the same type of accuracy? Either way, very cool. Might be time to see if friends and family have any old graphics cards their willing to part with. :D I still have 2 free PCIe slots on my computers. |

This new version is annoying. It keeps suspending my work saying CPU usage is too high. I cannot see how my changing my preferences had any effect. Any thoughts or a link to a thread more about this issue? I think I might uninstall it and go back to an earlier version if at all possible. Things were running just fine before this new version. If I want my CPU usage to run high, isn't it my business? My choice? |

Go to http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/prefs.php?subset=global and change the suspend if CPU option to "0" |

Go to http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/prefs.php?subset=global and change the suspend if CPU option to "0" Also avalable at Seti or any project with updated software or in Boinc manager if using local preference. Processor usage tab 'While processor usage is less than ??%' - Default is 25% 0 or 100 setting will ignore this option setting. Questions? Answers are in the BOINC Wiki. I cheated and looked at the projects he was connected too and chose one that I knew had the updated server software. |

Yeah, plus we've previously discussed 3 of the projects I'm crunching for. I just made the changes and we'll see what happens. Thanks again! |

Go to http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/prefs.php?subset=global and change the suspend if CPU option to "0" I made the change, but still get this message: 6/7/2010 8:24:34 PM suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 % |

Go to http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/prefs.php?subset=global and change the suspend if CPU option to "0" If you have used local manager preferences then the web preferences will be overridden. You will need to clear them for the web preferences to take or make the change in the manager. |
