Hi everyone,

I've decided to retire the GTX 260 due to heat issues and replace it with a different card. I'm torn between a $200 HD5830 or a $290 HD5850. I know how the HD5850 performs (I have one) but I'm not sure what to expect in terms of RAC with a HD 5830.

HD 5830

HD 5850

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is a Gigabyte 5830 running 960/1000 at 70C. Times are about 106 seconds per Work unit.

    You can click on my name and check out my computers, the 2 with the highest RAC have 5830s in them. 122K and 130K right now. I have a feeling they can do about 140 - 145/day when there's a ready supply of work (on this project), but I don't really track them. Looking at the Boincstats page for each computer, and subtracting about 4K/day for CPU tasks, that seems to be about right.

    [Edit] Oh, one's a Sapphire, the other an HIS, and I run them both at 875/900, they generally maintain about a temp of 58-60.

    Somewhere between the 5850 and 4890.

    5850 = 1440 sp = 725 core = 151w tdp
    5830 = 1120 sp = 800 core = 175w tdp
    4890 = 800 sp = 850 core = 190w tdp

    Maybe
    5830 rac = 5850 rac - 4770 rac or 4890 rac + 4770 rac.

    Another thing to remember is that even though the HD 5850 is faster than the HD 5830 it uses less power.

    Beyond, yeah decisions decisions, lol. As long as it doesn't run as hot as the GTX 260 I'll be happy, especially if its putting out 4x more credits.

    Or two HD4770 with a little overclock? Less power consumption, that is.

    Don't forget the power supply!
    If you get a "80 PLUS Gold" rated one, this can reduce the power consumption (and the heat).
    They may be a bit more expensive, but you recover the extra cost through you electricity bill.
