Hello all

i just destroyed the second core of my second 5970 and in a dual 5970 setup, i want boinc to ignore the fourth core. What should i do in order to continue my crunching for only gpu applications in milkyway@home?

Thank you for the replies.

put this into cc_config:

<ignore_ati_dev>n</ignore_ati_dev>

n = device number

ex. <ignore_ati_dev>0</ignore_ati_dev> tells boinc to ignore device 0 (primary display)

check boinc messages for the correct device numbers.

Note: Only works on boinc version 6.10.19 and higher, if using older version try the X in the cmdline (ex. x0 x1 x2 x3) of app_info

Having the 'MW uses up all of my 5870, leaving a very slow desktop [XP]' problem, I thought I'd try this. But first I had to install another card to use for video. A spare 3870 - my games of M$Hearts don't require a huge framerate. Had to install it in slot0 for XP to recognise it, moving my 5870 elsewhere.
Upshot - better hearts framerate and much better general desktop speed.
However, when I added ignore_ati_dev0 [to use the 5870 for crunching but leave the 3870 for desktop] MW went from slower-than-previously to stopped - a look at the messages shows that boinc only recognises the 3870 even though XP acknowledges that both are there, and enabled, and running the latest driver, and etc.
Any ideas, or do I need to go back to the old slow desktop?
Cheers,

PeterV

Is there a monitor or dummy plug attached to the 2nd gpu? With XP, boinc can crunch on the primary display even without monitor or dummy plug but will not detect the other gpus if there are no monitors or dummy plugs attached on the 2nd/3rd/4th gpu and the desktop extended.

Extended desktop, plugged an old vga monitor [via dvi->vga connector] into the 5870, rebooted, working wonderfully.

Thanls for your help, Haris.
Cheers,

Glad to be of help. Three of my machines in the house are configured like this. The onboard gpus are used for games, office works, web browsing, watching videos , etc. while the discrete cards are crunching collatz, mw, and dnetc. I can even play games or even online 3d games without lag or stutters. Wife doesn't complain anymore when she play her facebook games.

cc_config.xml is a file that you would create in notepad and save.

I did some search and succeeded; but after seconds, when i check the gpu usage, it still uses my two gpu cores despite BOINC states that one core is ignored. I edited the cc_config file as following:

<cc_config>
<log_flags>
[ ... ]
</log_flags>
<options>
<ignore_ati_dev>1</ignore_ati_dev>
</options>
</cc_config>

What is wrong with it?

After making or editing the cc_config (Data folder), clicking the read config file option on the boinc manager menu doesn't always work especially the gpu options. You have to restart boinc client or service.

If only 1 wu is processed at a time then only 1 gpu core is used. If using this option in DNETC, you have to detach and reattach otherwise it will still use all cores per wu.

I did what you told me and it didn't work out in DNETC@Home; but worked out in Milkyway@Home so i shifted to Milkyway.
