Just started 4 days ago and already passed the 4 million. Attacking now the 5 million mark.

Congrats!

Looks like your running that fancy new (crunch'ing) code.

It is not the new app promised by the MW project half a year ago. And it is also not the optimized version of Crunch3r, if you are thinking that. Crunch3r was actually worried he could be falsely taken as the initiator of our small experiment. In fact, he has not shared any code, nor advices how to optimize the code.

It was done by ourselves (we are two guys who arrived independently at around the same speed of the code and decided to do something). But the code of the original app is in a really horrible state. We/I would not be surprised, if there are even more performance pitfalls hidden.

Most interesting, and somewhat disheartening to see how much resource's I've put into this project to find that I've taken the scenic route.

So what are your plans? Will you be sharing your code with the MW project developers for the betterment of the project, or are you looking for the shock value of your results to goad them into action? Have you attempted share your code with them yet? Just curious.

Actually we had some short discussion with Crunch3r about the possibilities (he warned us to do the thing we are doing now) and the chances to change something. It appeared to me he was quite frustrated by the MW staff, as his hints what to look for were largely ignored. And at some point he has seen no reason to do just the work of the project staff.

And that point I really understand after looking to the source code. One gets the impression, that some 13 year old kiddy wrote that code (dependent on the exact kiddy it should be even better) with no idea how to put together a halfway reasonable performing app (I am not talking about optimization).

Because the code is in such a bad state, we came to the conclusion that much of our effort in the discussion about the improvements would be somehow wasted. The project first needs to get a somewhat motivated and intelligent guy willing to really look at the code (a clever undergraduate student would be just fine). Such a guy would actually do half of the improvements by himself. Only then I think it would be possible to tell them the tricks, which may be not that obvious to get the improvements as in our second version of the code.

Otherwise some outsider would have to write up the whole code (That should be actually their task, isn't it? Travis for instance wants to get a PhD about this stuff!) and maybe nobody there at MW would be able to change something on it.

So, for the time being, we are going the Shock and Awe route. But we hope something will change. The small challenge in our profile is serious. If they get their act together, we will pull back and help.

Meanwhile those of us who have got to the top 10 via the official, scenic route, are dropping out of it as you steam past us. If only I had the source code and knew how to compile it...

It is not our intention, that everyone now tries to get his own app. What you can and should do is to exert some pressure on the project. Either by supporting us and asking the staff for a substantial improvement of the official app, or just by voting with your feet.

I think you've made your point and staff are aware of it per the news on the home page.

Anyway, getting off topic, I'll leave it there and will probably leave this project too once I get to 4 million, the hard way

You should know the project is aware of this already for half a year. Has something changed?

We want to see some action of the project NOW, i.e. still this week. If we just wait it very well may be a cold day in hell before something happens.

Nah, it will only take a little over 3 hours. I've got 4 "372"s in varying stages of progress right now.

Have now joined the 1,000,000 point club.
Nearly all done with the old app.
Also reached this milestone in Team total a few days ago.

Congratulations to all other milestone makers as well.

300,000 on the clock for MW and the highest RAC I've ever had - 13,000. Nice :)
