hi,

got a new card ( second hand ) the 5970 but when i installed the drivers i was given the control panal does not show the three dials in the overdrive section it only shows activity not temp or fan speed which are pretty much the important ones ( well the temp is )
plus it wont allow me to lower the memory clock below 1000 which cant be correct

i downloaded the 10.3 catalyst drivers as seemingly later versions come up buggy with windows7 64 bit sometimes but no change

has anybody ever heard of such a thing or better still how to fix it ?

best regards
Ian

Did you try it with Afterburner?

hi,

Afterburner sorted one problem i.e. the memery clock which i got down to 760 from 1000 which was nice but could have been more

unfortunately it wont let me play with the fan speed it just sits their at 30 percent with no slider to speed it up a couple of percent

temps are sitting at 80 on full load but the ambient temp is not high in here yet when summer truly hits i can see those temps hurtling up to and above 90 degrees quite easily which is no good :(

it seems a monumental cock up that ati have shipped there latest flag ship card with not even the control panel my 4890's have !

best regards

Sorry Ian, you're wrong.
This Link http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=1505&nowrap=true#40890 gives you more info!
But - sorry, I have no info wether or not they corrected the control-panel issue.

Regarding to your temp-problem: a side-fan in your case (if not already present) is an excellent solution for this problem!

Regards,
Alexander

Hi Ian - The problem you describe sounds very similar to what happened when I first installed my 5970. In my case the card required a BIOS update to allow manual control of the ATI CCC Overdrive to work properly. This seems to be an issue with some XFX Black Edition Radeon 5970's apparently. Perhaps others also?

That being said, I still cannot get the memory clock to go below 1000 Mhz but I can set the fan speeds, GPU clock (825 Mhz) and see the temperature reading which is 67 degrees C, activity 96%, with the fan set to 100%. XFX'x voltage mod software is also flakey on my Windows 7 64 bit setup (sigh).

I have an XFX 5970. The BIOS update you refered to is normal with XFX 5970's, they tightly control the card to minimise warrenty hassles as their warrenty is a good one. It does seem strange at first, but once you have the card and BIOS update installed, got it sorted all is well, and CCC works ok with the card.

The ongoing pain is the memory speed setting as you discovered. That is fixed by going directly into two config files, one a standard catch all default config file, and the other a user set file. Its real fiddly to get right, and it either goes ok first time, or else a frustrating time sets in sorting it. The trick is to set both files at the same time with the CCC turned off, open the CCC, then activate the user set profile you made with the memory settings.

The easiest way to describe it is for me to send two profile files from mine, then you paste in the relevant settings into yours. If you PM a mail addy I can use, I will mail you the two profile files, and an explanation of what to do. It sounds more complicated than it actually is, usual story its wordy wordy to describe, but essentially simple to do if you take you time and pay attention to detail. Its a ten minute job, max, probably 5 mins if you planned it ok.

Once its done, just keep copies of the two files in another directory away from the ATI directories in case you need an "original" again (can happen on loading a new driver set). There is no danger to the card in any way, if the profile is wrongly entered, CCC will just overwrite it with a new one, the settings changes are benign in themselves. If you have not done so already, register the card with XFX, and you'll get an account there with access to latest downloads - they dont spam you, and by registering, you get access to responsive tech support - they are good guys there.

Regarding temperature, its ok to run it at 80-85, its built for it, no need to pound the fan which gets mega noisey at 100%. I usually have mine set between 55 and 70% depending on what app I'm running on it, and that usually keeps the temp at 78-82 degrees, which is comfortable.
