I have a computer with an ATI 5870 and an nVidia 8500 GPU in order to support 3 monitors (a card I already have is cheaper than a DP to DVI dongle). The problem is that boinc isn't detecting my 5870. I've installed the ATI 10.9 and nVidia 258.96 drivers for Win7-64 but only the 8500 is being detected by boinc, my MW ATI WU's all show a status of "gpu missing, Ready to start".

I tried enabling collatz to see if it was just a MW problem, and it promptly downloaded a single WU and began running it on the 8500. ETA 8 hours. LOL

Anyone know how to force boinc to acknowledge the existence of my 5870?

You have had a 5870 crunching away until 2240 UTC in your task record, but at present only shows the 8500GT as attached to PC. Maybe your driver install for the 8500GT got in the way.

Try going to MW preferences in your account, and set the location for your machine to "No" for NVidia and "Yes" for ATI.

The 8500GT will not work at MW, as that one does not support Double Precision Computing.

The time is about right. that would correspond to when I shut both of my 1366 systems down (#2 is CPU only and not listed here), and then swapped harddrives and boinc data folders (my intent was to keep the IDs synced with the CPUs even though the HDs they were installed on where changing from one PC to another). Disabling nVidia in my MW preferences didn't help. I'll try reinstalling the drivers and rebooting next.

Redoing the driver install didn't help...

I had to remove the latest drivers and go back to Catalyst 10.4 as BOINC didn't see my ATI cards with 10.5 or 10.7, I haven't tried anything later yet.

How do I revert to an old version of the drivers? I just tried running the 10.4 installer by according to CCC I'm still on 10.9.

I didn't notice it last night, but apparently when I reinstalled the 10.9 catalyst drivers I managed to screw up the detonators as far as boinc's concerned. After ~3 hours run time my collatz WU is now stalled with a GPU missing error as well.

This will sound a little drastic, however with all the hardware swopping and driver installs, there could be a real mix of issues going on - equally it could be a simple thing we are not yet aware of. I suggest you pull the NVidia card from the machine (its producing small credits only, and has gone off line), clean up the drivers, get machine working with the 5870, then move step by step from there.

That way you have a stake in the ground, and better chance of spotting errors. At present there could be multiple errors going on and its difficult to pin it down, without actually being there.

I suggest once you have pulled the NVidia card go here:
Guru3d Driver Sweeper - its safe, reputable, no issues.

Uninstall display drivers via control panel, then clean out all remaining display drivers bits with Driver Sweeper (just the display drivers, leave unchecked in the Driver Sweeper application all other options) for both ATI and NVidia. Its much better, though not mandatory, to do it inside Safe Mode( hit F8 repeatedly on rebooting to get in Safe Mode). Once you have cleaned, reboot, and on reaching desktop again, run driver sweeper again to make sure all bits of old drivers have gone. If there are still some there, clean out reboot until no more show up.

You may see a "wierd" display, as the machine may revert to in the inbuilt Windows basic 640x480 screen res with no other drivers in the machine, dont worry, thats normal.

When you are sure all bits have gone by looking with driver sweeper, re-install ATI, get the 5870 running. Deinstall current BOINC, via Control Panel, and reinstall BOINC. It should click in fine.

At that point, you can proceed step by step adding the 8500GT if you still want it, knowing you have a clean uptodate system.

Sounds a lot, but you should be able to clean up drivers etc and re-install in 10 mins or so, so its fairly quick.

That pretty much sums it up. Since i've been stuck with this mess about a week ago, here's how to get both cards working again.

1. uninstall both ATI & NVIDA drivers
2. reboot and run "Driver Cleaner" -> remove all references to ATI & NVIDIA
3. shutdown and remove the NVIDIA card
4. download and install the ATI drivers & reboot
5. shutdown and insert the NVIDIA card again
6. download and install the latest NV drivers & reboot

After that, both cards should be recognized by boinc again

One other thing may be worth considering. With all that has gone on, the registry could well be a mess of redundent/incorrect entries. Let the machine settle for a few days, then once you are happy that its all solid, take a copy of the registry off line to a CD (for safety), and run a reputable registry cleaner.

Dont rush into it, let it settle down, and solve all your issues first, it'll keep until all is solid. There is a small chance a registry error is one of the problems, but get it running first, it will be fine until then, Windows will survive :)

If you dont use your computer for gaming or heavy graphics, set the 8500gt as your primary display and the 5870 as secondary. So when you use your computer, the crunching speed of the 5870 wont be affected much.

With both nvidia and ati, dont install CCC. Use a third party utility to control your clocks, like MSI Afterburner or Rivatuner.

this worked good right up until the reboot at the end of step 6. I went from ATI working, nvidia working to nVidia working, ati not...

As a minor update I'll note that disabling the 8500 in device manager allows the 5870 to resume operation.

I recently had a similar problem with a GTX260, an onboard ATI GPU, current drivers and Windows 7 64bit. I fixed it by renaming two ATI dlls after reading this post here at the AMD Dev forum. The dlls to be renamed were:

C:\windows\SysWOW64\aticfx32.dll
C:\windows\System32\aticfx64.dll

Just completely stop and restart BOINC after that. Of course on your own risk! *g* I also used a cc_config.xml with the use_all_gpus = 1 option.

That worked to get both GPUs running, but I've noticed that areo glass isn't working on my desktop afterwards. The windows troubleshooting wizard says that my driver isn't compatable with WDDM, but won't give any indication about which gpu is mis-behaving...

tried the whole driver install cycle again tonight, initially in reverse order, hoping that I could stop at an intermediate state with boinc liking ATI but not nVidia. Didn't work.

Repeated the order from Zydor and initially had everything working except that CCC wasn't installed for some reason and as a result my 5850 was stuck at idle speed. I downloaded the stand alone CCC package, installed it, rebooted and now I'm back to WDDM not working right.

You cannot install CCC as that will not work with different vendors.

You need to use something like MSI Afterburner instead.
