I use CCC/MSI Overdrive to set my 5870 to run at a strait 890mhz at startup. It stays there and cranks out WU's in about 90s until I do a gaming session; after I'm done gaming the 5870 remains stuck at 400mhz and I can't find a way to kick its operating speed back up to 890 without rebooting. There has to be an easier way... |

while 890 is OK for crunching, but it's too much for the game. your card can not handle 890 in the game and reseting the card to 2D mode with 400 clocks. that's the answer on the question "WTF?" all you need to do is to make another "gaming" profile with lower clocks (i can say 850 is OK and stable while it's stock clocks) and switch to it when u wanna play. after the game switch to "crunching" profile with 890 clocks. it's not straight-forward but that's life, man :-) and just small piece of advice - try to play with GPU voltage (if your card can do so), especially for "crunching" profile and if u r lucky enough u can hit 1000ish clocks :-) |

That works as an explanation, but not being able to recover from an overheat situation without a reboot is fairly horrid design. |

what "overheat situation' u r talking about? if during gaming - that's OK, that is why driver goes to 2D mode. In fact, this 2D happends during the game, u just not noticing this :-) |

That was my understanding of why it was dropping from 890 to 400. The problem is that once it drops to 400, I can fiddle with settings and click the apply button as often as I want in CCC/overdrive but the GPU will not leave 400mhz until I reboot. |

that's true - while your card is in 2D mode already, nothing much you can except reboot your rig. And that's i'm talking about - u need to to reduce the clocks before playing the game. and in order to do so it's nice to have 2 profiles. |
