hi,

I started out here with one 4970 then added another 2 to the same box then moved the whole lot to DNETC for a change as i kept running out of work every time milkyway hit a tiny server hiccup
after getting myself a 5970 and finding after months no way of getting it to stop hanging every so often i've came back here on holiday lol

my questions are is it just me or is it the case your only given 6 wu per core on your cpu again as i thought it had been upped to more than that ?

with my card this gives me 12 mins of work which is pretty useless as a back up for any kind of outage

i dont run any kinds of apps because on my 4970's they only added a tiny bit in performance terms if any at all but i've had a look and people running 5970's seem to be getting some sort of huge performance boost with one of the apps
my card gets through each _17 work unit in about 130 seconds which i thought was quite good until i saw some peoples apps were getting this down to 230 for what i asume is an app running twice the wu at the same time
that would mean a time of around 115 seconds for each wu crunched some 15 seconds faster than mine

am i missing something about the apps doing wonderful for a 5970 that never happened with my 4970's ?

and if so can somebody point me to that spacific app please lol

best regards everybody
Ian

Ian,
I believe what you are seeing is the result of a core clock of 900-910 to get you that 230-240(2 concurrent) time for the 17_3s wu's.
I haven't encountered any app that will miraculously increase the speed of your GPU, but would love it!!

I`m doing the 17_3 in about 108.**, tho it differs between 108 and 110, here`s my pc specs:

cpu: 920 4.2ghz
mem 2000mhz 8-8-8-24-T1
gpu: 4x 5870 1040/1250
w7 64bit, ssd vertex2
boinc, 4x 60gb ssd raid 0

The interesting part is that you are only gaining 5-7 seconds by going up to 1040 on your overclock vs 910.

Wouldn`t know what the time would be if running the cards at stock, but i run this overclock mainly for games at wich the difference is like night and day (and for benchmarks) :P

Yeah, kind of had a feeling that's what you were doing, lol.
Here on MW you can turn your memory way down to conserve heat/energy as it's not needed that much to run the apps here.
Those are fine numbers regardless, maybe watercooled?

Yes, it`s all water cooled by a twin PMP450S and 360+480 rad altho i might add a tec element after i get my hands ond a good 980X batch next month

Power consumption and heat generation i`m not worried about as this is my 24/7 and not benchmark setup :P

I have noticed that running MW (GPU) and Aqua (CPU) WUs at the same time, causes the MW WUs to take as much as an extra 15~30 seconds to complete. These are not actual numbers from results, but from the "To Completion" column of the manager.

If you want maximum speed from MW don't run concurrent Aqua CPU WUs.

I did not see that when I was running Aqua while SETI was down, my tasks were all in the normal range.

My 5970 is currently taking about 122-125 seconds per 320 credit wu with Aqua on the CPU, by suspending Aqua and leaving the CPU free for MW it will drop about 3 to 4 seconds off the wu and the GPU utilisation will go up from 94-5% to 99%. This is with the GPU at 900/900 MHz. I can get the 3 to 4 seconds back by increasing the OC to 935/900MHz - but since it's summer and the GPU is currently sitting at 82-84°C anyway I'll leave it as is. Anyway I think I need to clean the dust bunnies out.

I run Spinhenge@Home on my CPU and you are right. Normaly my GPU is between 90 and 95% usage but when i turn off cpu tasks it goes to 99% and shaves a few seconds off. Now i am fiddeling around with settings and project preferences to maybe find a way to keep my 5850 at 99% while doing cpu work and maybe just loose those few seconds on the CPU tasks were it would matter even less.

On the other hand, 99% GPU usage? Wow! Has there been an update or was Milkyway always this efficient? Also looking at my stats it seems i am getting more credit from milkyway than ever before. I think its mostly because of no recent outtages and all working so well but i was wondering why i am nearly getting 100k more now for a few days than most of the last year.

Gosh, I guess I should have mentioned that I am currently running MW on a pair of 4870s and because of that, I see a larger amount of time being lost while Aqua is running. Even still I figure that running MW and Aqua at the same time yields more credit over all than not doing so, so I just let them run together.

I mean, I might be considered by some to be a "credit whore", but, I'm not greedy!
