Without using an opti app Cpu performance and credits are poor. Is there any plans to put out better cpu apps?

I know that the stock app is pretty much unusable on a CPU.
FWIW, it seems that i can reduce crunching times to less than ~5h on a XEON(5365@3 Ghz, core 2 based)...

Anyway, i do know that that's far away from what the previous opt app did...

I'd be interested to know some crunch times on different CPUs with the stock app (cpu:time:credits), before using a LUT for the INT EXP part...
(wich i know for a fact that the previous optimized CPU app used and i allready suggested to Matt for the GPU BUT it'll greatly speed up the stock CPU app as well)

On a Quad XEON I had a RAC of about 4800 to 5000 credit/day with the old 0.21SSE3 optimized app. Now with the standard 0.50SSE2 it went down to about 800 credit/day.

A unit takes more than 12 hours to complete now, before it was something like 4h30 IIRC.

If people are looking for credit then there is no point hanging around here any more, that is quite clear. Those of us interested in the science will be the only ones to stay. A shame because it was a good payer for quite a while, but I guess that nothing good lasts forever.

Now that DNETC has disappeared as well, I see no point in investing in any more ATI cards which I was thinking of doing, so I shall be saving my money for something else more rewarding, perhaps a decent holiday instead.

Even NCI stuff like Freehal has died, and I'm beginning to think that 2011 is heralding a barren time for Boinc in general.

From looking at it for either credit, science or both it doesn't seem as worth it now. When the same task is much longer for the same science & credit it doesn't make sense to me.

I still think that the science is worth it, even if it now does take longer than it did, for less credit. I will be sticking around, but I can't pretend that I'm not disappointed.

So you're really not interested in the science? JK, hopefully the credit levels will return. I know the whole credit issue mystifies the MW team, but they have to realize that DC BOINC has become a game/hobby/competition for many. No different than any other completion of which us humans are so fond. The added bonus is that we get to help science.

Yes I am, which is why I said I would be sticking around :-)

It would be nice to think so.

Happy to agree, but don't hold your breath ...

I don't do it for credit, I run Seti for 11 years now and since boinc exists I run seti/einstein/lhc/milkyway only. It's just dissapointing that milkyway credits went down like this, but I still run it.

Yes, quite a bit faster than the 0.50sse2 app.

My Xeon needs ~ 8800 sec. for a 213 credit WU (13_3s_fix20)(Intel compiler). Depending on the compiler used for the stock app, it should be ~ 10k sec(or less).

Not bad for the first try.

yup, thanks Crunch3r! and if you need a beta tester for your optimized CPU app... ;-)

Is this from using compilation flags, or changing the code?

If any of the changes are things we can do on our end, we'd be more than happy to implement them.

Code changes. I've given Matt some hand vectorized code (SSE2/SSE3) but there's still work to be done on that.

Matt,

Would it be possible to also issue a stock app_info.xml for MW@Home? It might eliminate some problems, especially for those of us who are not programmers, as well as helping with any troubleshooting by getting everyone on the same sheet of music.

Regards,
Steve

P.S. I'm on Ubuntu 11.04.................the rest of the world will have to look out for itself!! :)

That will be great to get a decent CPU app, not run a single MW WU since my PC upgrades to GTX460's coincided with the project upgrade and the Nvidia opti apps disappeared.
