11.4 Catalyst Production Version - Red Flag for 5970s

Had a problem with 11.4 on my 5970s. Been at it for three hours now. At present am running a PG PPS Sieve app on 4xWUs, see what happens, been running for around 10 mins, so far so good, but ....

Cant get 11.4 to run with MW WUs. Two things will happen, either it goes to full term then sticks at 1 second to go, promptly crashing the PC, or it will get to around halfway and crash the PC anyway - time saver mode :)

I have loaded myself to death, all the usual driver sweepers, deleting Windows graphics devices to force rebilud, sweep the registry until it glimmer's in the moonlight :)

Run out of things to try - I have a feeling 11.4 is a dead duck with 5970s I have got it loaded on my other machine (32bit Win7 with a 5850), no issues, went in first time.

I'll run the PG WUs full term, and if as seems likely at present they succeed, then I will try a MW WU once more - although I dont hold up much hope for the latter.

I have rolled back to 11.3 during the saga, and all was well, go back to 11.4 and MW falls over. Hardware is: 1090T @3.7Ghz 16Gb RAM 2x5970s BOINC 6.12.26 ( its not 6.12.26, its working fine elsewhere and working fine on my other machine running MW on a 5850)

At present a cautionary tale until I finish off a few other things, but done enough to raise a red flag in case other 5970 owners have issues. In regard to the latter, anyone with a 5970 who has it running MW with 11.4, grateful you post, then I know to look harder .... where is another question, but at least I'll know.

It fell over with the PG WUs right at the end, in the same way as with MW WUs. So it looks like its a clash with at least 5970s, and not specific to any Project. Its possible its a Crossfire Issue, but I am not messing with that right now, done enough AMD Beta testing for one night :)

I'm rolling back to 11.3 again, will post when up and running to close the loop, and hopefully show all is well again - the latter would shed more shadow over 11.4 for 5970s.

No, the 5970 is a whole different animal as far as drivers go. Both the NVidia and ATI dual GPU cards have had much more than their share of issues.

Yup I have the same feeling - the oldsaga of 2xdual GPUs and scaling up for 4xGPUs on a machine. They've been there before with this. Too early to say with certainty thats it, but its really looking like it again unfortunately.

If I am right, then 2 x 5870s should be ok, if anyone tries that and falls over,would be good if you could post that here - helps keep the pot boilng to warn others.

Rolled back to 11.3(APP) {again} with no issues, in first time after cleaning it all out first.

Done my bit for posterity .... :) Leaving it at 11.3 for now, might wind up the motivation to try for 11.4 again sometime, but certainly not for a while, if not wait to see what 11.5 is like :)

Any dual 5970 owners who do get 11.4 loaded, grateful you post, and I'll have yet another look to see what I did wrong - but at present it looks like 11.4 is a dead duck for dual 5970s on crossfire (and I'm staying crossfire, cant be "£"£$% messing around outside crossfire with 4 GPUs).

I'm using the beta 11.4_preview_march23 on a single 5970. It didn't have the APP/OpenCL/SDK 2.4 section included. It worked fine on MilkyWay but of course didn't work on PPS Sieve.

I downloaded and installed SDK 2.4 and it worked on PPS Sieve. Needed a reboot because without it was giving errors on 2nd 5970 core, due to something about the slot not being available I think. Uses a full CPU core for each task which is normal for multiple ATI GPUs on PPS Sieve. Don't know if the developer there will ever fix that, I think he got fed up with OpenCL on ATI and bought an NVIDIA card.

Just tried it again on MilkyWay, still works fine.

I know it isn't the production version 11.4 that you asked about, this is just for information.

I have try to run 2x5870 in crossfire for the first time today
using the new 11.4 drivers and have the same experience as you Zydor.
After 2 wu's or so the computer freezes completely.

5870s ?? Thats ominous ....

I have also gone back to the 11.3 drivers and it's working just fine so fare.

Same thing happened to me on my 2x5850's where it would BSOD before finishing the WUs.

Here problems with 2x5850 under 11.4, too. Freezes and BSOD (error in atikmpg.sys).

Rollback to 11.3 was sucessfull.

I tried it on a dual GPU machine ATI HD 5850 & NVidia GTX 460 (previously working fine with the v11.4 preview). Locked the computer when the MW WU reached completion. Went back to v10.12 and it's running perfectly.

Too bad 11.4 Catalyst can't be tested against the old MW version.

yes , it works fine for my 6970

Tried 11.4 with a 5850 card and it just locked the machine (win 7 64) so back to 11.2

It's interesting that the 11.4 preview worked well and the 11.4 release doesn't.

ive not had any problems with the 11.4 drivers on my single 5850 card

I want to try and get my dual Xeon XP 32bit server up and running again, then load the 11.4 APP AGP Hot fix drivers for my HD3850.

I wonder if I wil get problems?
