Message 48539 - Posted: 7 May 2011, 12:19:56 UTC

Hi,

I upgraded to BOINC 6.12.xx a couple of weeks ago. One new feature is that they hide the standard messages and only present the ones they consider important. The message "Message from server: your app_info doesn't contain a version for n-body simulation" belongs to these. however, the catch is that these messages also appear as pop-ups, interrupting normal work.

If I've seen this message once it quickly starts to become annoying. And especially so if I choose not to run any MW cpu apps in my account settings. In this case it should be clear for the server that there's no point in badgering me about the CPU work.

i went to BOINC v6.12.18 months ago while troubleshooting multi-GPU issues. since then, i've also noticed the monotonous "your app_info doesn't contain a version for n-body simulation" message in the notifications tab. however, as annoyingly repetitive as it is (especially considering that, like you, i choose not to run CPU tasks via my account settings), it has never interrupted any ongoing work from MW@H or any other projects that happen to be running when the pop-up occurs.

when you say the pop-ups interrupt your ongoing tasks, specifically what is happening to them? are they erroring out? are they just pausing for a long time?

Sorry, I wasn't clear about this: the pop-up interrups me doing my work. The WUs are not affected by this.. of course :)

Hmmm...

Are you guys talking about the balloon which pops up from the tray icon?

If so, I agree it's customary in decent apps to be able to disable features like that if you want.

I was able to get rid of the balloons by going to Tools, Display and network options and changing the notice reminder interval to Never.

The Boinc Devs obviously take lessons from the Microsoft Office developers.

It's in there somewhere, but we've hidden it in a different place, just to make you look for it .....

Thanks! I had no idea such an option existed.

I know it is not in there at version 6.12.15 -- so I just upgraded to 6.12.26 to be able to make that thing go away.

It really was becoming anoying

Thanks for the info on it.
