What kind of problem do you have?
It works with XP and win7, not with Vista.

No but make sure your MB supports it. I have 4 machines running NVidia/ATI. Works with both Win7 and XP, at least with the FoxConn AMD 790FX MBs.

I did that with two types of ASUS MB.

I am not a programmer, so maybe running both nvidia and ati simultaneously is beyond me. if so, just tell me, that's ok. I don't want to screw something up so badly that i can't fix it. my msi mobo has built-in ati radeon HD3000 graphics. i added an nvidia gtx 560ti. ati graphics no longer function. would love to get that processing power back.

Can it be done, and if so, are there step by step instructions somewhere that an interested but non-programmer cruncher can follow?

Basic system is: win 7 SP1 64 bit running on
AMD Phenom II 955 Quad-Core 3.2 GHz
AMD 760G+SB710 Chipset
12GB DDR3 Memory
2TB SATA II Hard Drive
Integrated ATI Radeon HD 3000 series graphics from AMD

I upgraded PS to a Thermaltake 850W and then added nvidia gtx 560 ti. There should be plenty of power left over to run both graphics simultaneously.

Thanks for any help or guidance you can offer.

Onboard HD3xxx cannot be used at MW, but gives with collatz mini ~3hrs runtime.

If you check your messages from BM (scroll up to the beginning) there should be a part where boinc decides which GPU is used. The HD3xxx is usually marked as not used.
This can be 'repaired' by writing a cc_config.xml file.

First find the directory, where your boinc projects are stored. Usually you should have two BOINC directories, one storing the application and the other one holding project data. Thats the one we are looking for.
Unfortunately under win7 it is a hidden directory, you need to make that visible first. This can usually be done by opening windows explorer, check 'Extras'. Here you can make your hidden files and directories visible.

Stop BM.
Then open a standard editor or notepad
add the following lines:

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Save that file in the boinc directory as cc_config.xml

Restart BOINC.[/img]

Message 49740 - Posted: 29 Jun 2011, 7:20:16 UTC - in response to Message 49698.

Followed instructions. Got this message on reboot:
"The catalyst Control Center is not supported by the driver version of your enabled graphics adapter. Please update your AMD graphics driver, or enable your AMD adapter using the Displays Manager."

Installed new drivers for AMD. reboot, no change. nvidia works fine. Went to display mgr in control panel but AMD not listed.

Do you have any further ideas?
Thank you!

Yes, I do.
If you perform a search in this forum for the keyword 'dummy plug' you will find instructions.
You may need to do an advanced search, try 'last 6 months'.

The problem is, that ATI assumes a monitor attached to the GPU, otherwise it will be disabled. NVIDIA is much more tolerant.

you can also try connecting your ATI card to one of the monitor's other inputs, assuming it has more than one. that way you don't need a dummy plug to trick the ATI card into thinking its connected to a monitor. i don't think it'll matter which GPU you actually run the display with (the integrated GPU or the discrete GPU). also, with 2 GPU's, one must be the primary GPU that runs the display, and the other a secondary GPU (both determined by the BIOS). as such, you'll need to right click on the desktop, bring up the display properties, go to the settings tab, select your discrete GPU from the list of available GPU's, and be sure to check the "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor" check box. i use WinXP Pro 32-bit, so finding this option on another OS might be slightly different.

I use an DVI --> HDMI adapter and connected it to my TV.
That worked.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!

Sorry I haven't updated sooner. Long hours working this week so haven't had free time until today. My monitor has multiple inputs. Tried every combination of simultaneous DVI and VGA input from nvidia card and standard pc outputs. Fail. Used a DVI to VGA converter and tried again. Fail. Can't get any output from onboard vga or dvi outputs with the nvidia card in place. Took nvidia card out of machine and both dvi and vga output from pc operate normally. Looked in bios for any type of setting to affect this but couldn't find one that had any effect. Reset bios to optimized default and saved. Found instructions for a dummy plug, made one and tried again. Same results. The nvidia card somehow overwrites the graphics control to disable the integrated ATI graphics so that there is no output at all from either the vga or dvi plugs coming off the mobo and I can't get this to change.

Bugs me that I can't crunch with the ATI integrated Radeon 3000 and the nvidia 560ti card at the same time. Maybe I am just being obsessive, as I know the 3000 isn't all that powerful.

Am still open to ideas.

exactly what motherboard do you have (what make & model)?

i ask b/c during my initial research on which socket AM3 motherboards with integrated video would play nice with both ATI/AMD and nVidia discrete GPUs, i was told by two different people that, in their own experiences, they were unable to get their GIGABYTE motherboards with integrated ATI/AMD GPUs to play nice with a discrete nVidia GPU. more specifically, one of them said that some GIGABYTE boards require the discrete GPU to power the display in order to use it for compute stuff too. when i asked him if he could be any more specific than that, he responded by saying that he simply could not get the discrete nVidia GPU running while concurrently using the integrated GPU for the display. when i asked him if he thought it was an ATI/nVidia driver conflict, he said he was pretty confident that it was just the motherboard b/c he gave the nVidia card to a friend using the same exact motherboard, nVidia and ATI drivers, but a different OS, and he still had to use the nVidia card for the display in order to also use it for crunching.

this very same system configuration that wouldn't work on his GIGABYTE board worked without a problem on a BioStar motherboard. the BioStar motherboard manual stated though that this couldn't be done with 2 discrete nVidia GPUs. he never did test to see if he was able to run the display on the integrated ATI GPU concurrently with a single nVidia card and a single ATI/AMD card.

i can't imagine that GIGABYTE is the only manufacturer out there who's motherboards with AMD IGPs don't play nice with discrete nVidia GPUs...though in all my research at the time, i never did find claim of another manufacturer having these problems. the other guy who mentioned that he had the same issues with his GIGABYTE motherboard also said that he was successful in resolving the issue by switching to motherboards manufactured by both ASUS and ASRock. so at the very least, you know you can give ASUS, ASRock, or BioStar a try if you suspect that your current motherboard may be the reason why you can't use both the integrated and discrete GPUs simultaneously (for crunching or otherwise).

Interesting that some mobos play nice and share and some don't. maybe there should be kindergarten for mobos!

My mobo is an MSI 760GM-E51 utilizing an SB710 Chipset. I am far from a hardware expert - I found this info on the specsheet from the pc. My manual says nothing about running nvidia and ATI together, but it does give info on the benefits of putting an additional ATI card in there. I've actually been thinking about building a new pc in the fall after it cools down a bit. I'd get a mobo designed for nvidia, put my 560ti in it, and replace the nvida card in my existing pc with an ATI card. Not only would that solve the problem but it would also give me more flexibility to select projects since many projects prefer ATI cards.

Can you please post the beginning part of your boinc messages. It contains a section like
03.07.2011 07:37:37 | | ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6900 series (Cayman) (CAL version 1.4.1417, 2048MB, 2816 GFLOPS peak)
03.07.2011 07:37:37 | | ATI GPU 1: ATI Radeon HD 5800 series (Cypress) (CAL version 1.4.1417, 1024MB, 2304 GFLOPS peak)
This gives information whether or not the card is not found / found but not used. If it is not found there might be a problem in the bios or configuration; otherwise a cc_config.xml can help.
