Blurf! Do you have a ok. from the BOINC staff \ administration to connect funding with extra credit or do you not need their permission?

Simplex I did not post the announcement....please look at who the announcement was written by. It was written by Professor Heidi Newberg and posted by Matthew Newby. So the answer to your question is YES all MW Admins and Staff are fully involved.

You misunderstand me Blurf.
I asked if you had a ok. from the BOINC staff \ administration, not the MW Admins and Staff.

EDIT:
I think that the question \ concept of connect funding with extra credit should be handled both by the Milkyway- and BOINC staff and need a Ok. from both. We also belong to the BOINC community, not just Milkyway.

APOLOGY TO MILKYWAY

There was a discussion going on at another project regarding the issue of paying money for credit. I referred to the recent Milkyway announcement we are discussing here, and pointed out that it was mainly to support a PhD student, the extra credit was a by-product.

The information was public knowlege anyway, but it has been pointed out to me that I may have inadvertently generated negative publicity for this project. If that is the case, I apologise, that was never my intention.

Cris S! I can't see that you did anything wrong at all. We belong both to the Milkyway & the BOINC community and, hopefully, living in a free world. If peopel tells you that you can't discuss, with in the BOINC community, questions that belongs both to the Milkyway & BOINC community they are wrong.

People have, and will always have, different point of view but banning people that want to debate the differences is just the wrong way to go.

It is what it is. Anyone can come and read the post.
Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected?
If it makes sense, DON'T do it.

ANOTHER APOLOGY TO MILKYWAY !
(and off topic, I know)

We had a discussion on a projects`board about creating a list of projects using or not using CreditNew. It was never my attempt to bash any project, especially not Milkyway because I really like Travis and his way of running the project. This list was supposed to be strictly informal.

While "googling" for results on this case, I stumbled over this link : Thread

Not long after that I received a PM from Blurf, in which he asked me to stop bashing Milkyway.

And here is my mistake: Travis TESTED CreditNew, but IS NOT USING it !!!

My apologies to Travis, the project, and the whole community. This was false information at its worst !

I know that I`m off topic here, but I guess that a lot more people read the news section, and therefore this info is spreaded as wide as possible. If the mods decide to move it, then please do so !

Again my deepest regret, and SORRY that I posted before verifying the info !

In the vein of honesty and openness, I will state that I banned someone today. I have hidden not only the messages of the banned person but also those referencing it to avoid further conflict.

No details are to be posted but the person made a serious threat against the Milkyway project and also levelled some very personal profane insults at Dr. Newberg.

While there are some strong feelings involved in this idea, please understand that there is no tolerance for threats or abusive behavior whether it be at the personal or systemic level. Certainly personal attacks on myself or any MW Staff/Admins will not be tolerated.

Thank You.

This is being posted at the request of Professor Newberg:

Dear MilkyWay@home volunteers,

It appears that I have made a mis-step in management of MilkyWay@Home, regarding double credits for fundraising. I believed that this had been done before. I have since discovered that not only I was incorrect, but it is also inconsistent with the BOINC credit system. As volunteers, you have donated enormous computational resources to my group, and on top of that have created a powerful community that not only helps us with software but also teaches us how to be responsible members of your community. We will be running double credit two days this week to make up for lost credit in the past, but we will not be running a double credit fundraiser in September. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. I will need a little time to understand what the right way is to do this, so stay tuned.

Best Wishes,
Prof. Newberg

That is of course totally unacceptable, and it was a correct decision to ban them. Can I enquire whether this is a permanent ban?

That is still under discussion.

I must admit even though using double credits as an incentive for fund raising was a little unorthodox, it wasn't a bad idea really. In fact quite a good one.

Shame the minority naysayers won again!

I didn't see anything wrong with it either as long as it wasn't replacing the already promised days.

We will be running double credit two days this week to make up for lost credit in the past

Any timetable yet?
