I think Abe got it about right.

You can please some of the people all the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot please all of the people all the time.

What about us guy's who might/will be on holiday in September.

Michael.

You're quite right, michael.

But the odds are that there are more people on vacation in the summer months than in september, when school has started again (at least in the northern hemisphere).

The question should be : do you try to please as many people as you possibly can, or are you happy with fewer ?

My main complain though, is about the very short notice given to the crunchers.
Given a week's notice, I might have been able to have someone switch-on my main crunching machine with the ATI card.

Now it's unfortunately too late for me.

No biggy, but after the fund-raising misshap, a little more forethought might have been a good idea.

Anyway, decisions have to be made by people in charge and, as you stated, you can't please everybody all the time.
In any case, this won't change my interest and involvement in the project.

Cheers for keeping this long-standing promise. To be honest, I already gave up on that. Good to see you made up your mind and found a better decision.

7/20/2011 12:17:16 AM Milkyway@home Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance

Edit: Back to normal. But if I wasn't here, I would have ran out of WUs before the hourly update.

For real this time, out of WUs.

7/20/2011 12:51:05 AM Milkyway@home Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance

a helpful member FruehwF recently showed me how to write a batch file for the BOINC install directory (where boincmgr.exe is located) that updates the MW@H project, or more specifically forces BOINC to contact the MW@H scheduling server. i also scheduled a task through Windows that executes the batch file every 15 minutes - approx. the amount of time it takes my 5870 to crunch through the standard queue of 12 tasks. this way, if my host happens to contact the MW@H scheduling server during one of Matt's resets (that only last a few minutes), and i get deferred for an entire hour even though it really isn't down for nearly that long, the batch file will cause my host to contact the server again long before that hour passes.

I could use a copy of that with instructions.

no problem.

what you first need to do is create the batch file. find the BOINC install directory (not the BOINC data directory). if you don't recall exactly where you installed it, just run a windows search for boincmgr.exe and note where it is located - that is your BOINC install directory. once you've navigated to that folder/directory, right click in it and create a new text document (via Notepad) and name it something like "update_MW.txt" - do not use MS Word or any other word processor, as they can occasionally add or format in hidden characters without your knowing it. add the following text to the file:

boinccmd --project http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/ update

then save the file and change the file extension from .txt to .bat - now it is a batch file that will force BOINC to contact the MW@H scheduling server every time it is executed.

now you need to schedule a windows task that executes the batch file update_MW.bat (or whatever you named it) however often you'd like . you're running Windows 7, and i'm using WinXP 32-bit, and so i don't know if the Windows Task Scheduler works the same way or if its even found in the same place. either way though, once you've found it, it should be pretty self explanatory from that point forward. at first i had trouble scheduling the task more often than once a day, but then i found some advanced settings that allowed me to run the task every 15 minutes...

lastly, i'd like to give credit where credit is due - i was shown how to do this by two very helpful members, FruehwF and Beyond. if you have have any further questions, or get stuck, don't hesitate to ask for more help. hopefully these instructions are straightforward enough to make it work the first time around.

Friends...

The promise has been kept and on behalf of the staff, I am sorry it took so long. Even with the possibility of another A/C shutdown we realized this simply had to be done ASAP.

For those on vacation or otherwise unable to reach their machines to make the adjustments, I am sorry but we cannot cater to individual needs. I wish we could but with such a substantial base of valuable crunchers it is not possible.

Soak em up while you can!!

Looks like the assimilator/validator crapped out. Not too bad yet:

I've had them from 4-15 hours. Rather random at times.

Also the assimilator still seems stuck. (or stuck again)

Please post WU issues/troubleshooting needs in the Number Crunching forum in the maximum time limit elapsed bug thread if appropriate. This thread is for the Make-Up Credits only. Thank You

Sorry, can't agree with you on this one. Who made up " make up credits " ? Every time credits are overdone it dilutes and diminishes all the other work that has been completed. There will always be crunchers who would make their own credits if they could. Yes they cost you nothing but the simple fact is your project was down and nothing is owed. Credits are not to be altered for good or bad, period. Otherwise there is no point to having them at all. Patrick

Pay attention. Credits were rolled back 2 days because the database was corrupted.

We'll be running two days of double-credits this week on Wednesday and Thursday to make up for outages earlier in the summer.

Looks like it just ended, and about 12 hours short of 2 days...

well the servers went down approx. 12 hours shy of the end of the double credit period (36 hours into it). i didn't think to look at the credit values that i started earning when the server first came back online around 12:00 PM Eastern (16:00 UTC) today. after letting it run on its own for a while though, i came back to check the status of my host only to notice that my GPU had just started crunching MW@H tasks again, and that i was out of work for at least 5-10 min. perhaps this was just a server reset by Matt or Travis necessary to end the double credit period?

Could be but 12 hours short of what was promised.

There will be another set of double-credit days--just have to confirm them before announcing them.
