Racked up 437,000 credits so far with it @12-16 hour days. In the next year I will possibly get a new pc.

Actually if it has a pci-e slot, when the gpu work units come back you could add a good gpu to that and keep it going for many more years! Yes you would probably need to upgrade the power supply too but like chicken mcnuggets....parts is parts.

After some break time (months) I will be revitalising my oldest 2 PCs.

The oldest, and was crunching well is a dual P3 server (Supermicro MoBo) running W2K pro ... now 13 years old and GPU crunching using twin PCI 9500GTs. If things go OK in a few weeks I will see if I can add a GT430 PCI card as well.

The other ancient PC is an XP pro dual Prestonia Xeon Intel server, which uses an HD3850 in the AGP slot. I plan to add 2 x 9500GTs to the mix, when I've sorted the OS. This machine is about 9 years old.

Only one rig I have that crunches intermittently: an oldie Amd Athlon X2 6000+ for WCG and the HD4770 for Milkyway. BTW, does anyone have a spare 4770 for sale? I would really appreciate having another pci-e slot occupied.

I MUST revise my statement, the older pci-e slots will NOT take a top of the line gpu! I was trying to put an AMD 5770 into a pci-e 1.1 slot and it just won't work, it apparently works on some motherboards but not all of them. You will need a pci-e slot that is blue to be totally compatible with the newest cards!

My primary cruncher is also my gaming machine. Its a socket 775 Q9650 overclocked to 3.6 Ghz, could go higher but need liquid cooling as temps are unmanageable otherwise. 3.6Ghz has been stable for several years now and is what I actually burned the processor into, or where it settled. The motherboard is an ASUS P5E3 Premium @n. I also have a twin of this system with the P5E3 Deluxe version of the board running a Q6600. Both were running 4870 X2's, but I've since changed to an XFX 6970. Lo and behold right after I bought that the 7970 is slated to hit the market the following month. The rest of the systems contain velociraptors in RAID, Ultra X3 1600 Watt power supplies.

It used to take about three minutes or a little over on the 4870 X2's to crunch MW WU's, it now takes 55 seconds on the 6970, and can't wait to see what the 7970 brings. I occasionaly will link the two computers via BOINC, but the electric bill gets too high.

An older machine is a SOYO Dragon Ultra board with a 2.8Ghz single core. A very good machine with onboard IDE RAID capability.

Long ago I used to crunch on super socket 7's and 486's.
