My understanding is that this is to help make a 3d model of the galaxy, any chance we can see how this model is coming along?

The model is currently mathematical, and still undergoing revision - hence the continuation of work units. :) We hope to have a paper out this year with some of the results.

We would love to provide a visualization of current progress, but right now or focus is on producing scientifically-relevant results. I would like to produce some publicity pictures in the near future.

Cheers,
Matthew N

I was about to ask the same things. Anytime you think we should be able to see an actual model or picture?

What this project is doing is determining the positions a shapes of tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies that the Milky Way is currently "gobbling up." What we can produce, then, is a map of these tidal streams relative to the Milky Way. We would like to makes a nice visualization of this map once it's near completion.

We hope to have the North galactic cap finished this year, and the data for the South galactic cap was just released last year. The southern data still needs to be processed (removing errors and discontinuous areas) and then it has to run on Milkyway@home, so we'll have plenty of work for a while. :)

Cheers,

Is there any way we can get access to the data to see what visualizations we can reproduce? I'm not sure how large the data would be, but would it be possible to setup a JSON-API so we can pull new data once it becomes available?

I would think I can get a few schools around where I live to help out with the project with their dev. super computers to pull some of the work-load, but I want to be able to show them where the project is.

We get our data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Anyone can create a free account and query the database for data (For Data Release 7): http://casjobs.sdss.org/CasJobs/

You can read Nathan Cole's Paper or PhD thesis (http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/information.php) to get the query criteria.

We do a lot of cleaning up on the original data based on in-house analysis of inherent artifacts and errors in the SDSS system. Once we publish these methods in a paper I am currently putting together, we'd be happy to share the processed data sets.

Yes, it would be great to see a visual of what we've been contributing to.

I'd really like to see the model too. I understand the science comes first. However, it sounds like we'll be waiting a long, long time.

Matthew, unless I'm misreading your post, you're saying that the loose plan is to put together a visualization of the map "once it's near completion." Then you mention the North galactic cap being finished this year, and you guys have yet to start on the southern data.

Does this mean we're looking at 2+ years to see any sort of visualization of what we're crunching?

...So should I assume we won't be seeing the map for a few years?

That is a LOT of faith being asked for by us crunchers! I am guessing this is being done in a somewhat orderly fashion, as opposed to strictly haphazard way. If this is true maybe the project could give us a small preview glimpse of what is expected when we do more, NOT a final image, but a glimpse of what our crunching is producing.

Please see this thread.

We're working on it! And we hope to have pretty plots in the near future (although getting the scientific ones for the paper is currently our highest priority).
