6-Week Final Update:...looks like BOINC Manager 6.12.43 has solved all of my issues with spontaneous restarts, waiting for gpu statuses and mdnsresponder system freezes...yay!...

...seeing how 6.12.35 was not playing well with OSX 10.6.8, perhaps the kind folks at BOINC would consider elevating 6.12.43 as their preferred v.6 OSX install on this page?...

Download BOINC client software:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

...and again, my sincere thanks to everyone for all your time, help, insights and suggestions!... :)

BOINC Community:
I am having this same issue - I suspect.. My BOINC Client keeps "hanging" and I believe it is from the WU's. I have to restart BOINC several times a day because none of the WU's are progressing. The time just stops decrementing across the board. I've been running BOINC for over 10 years and I've never had an issue before. I'm currently running: Milky Way, SETI, Einstein, and Climate. Einstein and Climate models are having a particular problem running to completion - perhaps because SETI and MWay have much shorter run times. I've currently suspended SETI and MWay to concentrate on Einstein and Climate and nurse my current WU's through to completion.

I am on OS Lion. IMac 27' with 8 cores, and 8 Gig Ram. I run a percentage of my CPU for BOINC - 50% - to keep down the heat. I was running 7.0.25 but just loaded experimental 7.0.28 two days ago to see if the problem would go away. No change.

I am now looking at going back to 6.12.35 because that is what is on the download site. I would like to try the .43 version that worked for Jimmy G. but don't know where to locate it.
Is there a URL for that version?
Thanks

First STOP restarting the pc! Try stopping Boinc and then restarting it instead, this should fix the problem temporarily! The problem is most likely drivers, they are either too new or too old. Too new is more likely though, new video drivers come out all the time and are designed to make gaming better, but gaming is now what most crunchers do, so upgrading is NOT a good idea unless you MUST! Another driver that I have seen cause troubles is the network card drivers.

As for downloading anything, Berkeley is down right now so nobody can download any version unless they have it cached.

Hi Curtis, and welcome to the boards!

Sorry to hear about your woes...been there, pulled those hairs out. :) While running buggy releases can certainly be an exercise in frustration I'm sure the developers here would appreciate your help and feedback in ironing out the glitches you're encountering in v7 (that, of course, you've got the time and patience for such things). Something to think about. As you can see from this thread (and associated links), cracking what the problem and solutions are can take some time!

Looks like you and me are both running the same iMac hardware and, yes, I find 6.12.43 to be rock solid for OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard on that machine. Hopefully .43 runs as nicely on OSX 10.7 Lion. The .43 release can be found at the link in the post directly above your post (when they BOINC servers are back up and running!), but be mindful that there are a few extra steps required of you beyond a simple install-and-run or you'll lose your existing WUs...when the servers are back up you'll want to peddle over to...

Release Notes for BOINC 7.0 - BOINC:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Release_Notes_for_BOINC_7.0

...for the details.

Best to you,
:)

P.S. Hint: The next time you experience a hang open up Activity Monitor (Applications>Utilities>Activity Monitor) and see if the processes are still in memory and whether they are active.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am more than willing to help debug this. My degrees are in CS so I can gather up whatever info is useful - just point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Curtis

Hi again, Curtis,

Sherlock Holmes & The Case Of The Missing Cadaver

Looks like the BOINC folks performed a CIA-like execution, cadaver removal and evidence cleanup of 6.12.43 over at that page (actually, the link for the 6.12.43 download was linked off the above page, the actual page where I originally downloaded 6.12.43 a few months back was here...

Download BOINC client software:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php )

They've also gone through the trouble of removing any evidence of its existence in the official BOINC Wiki...

VersionHistory – BOINC:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/VersionHistory

...if I were the suspicious sort, I'd say that folks were flocking to 6.12.43 when they realized that 7.0.25 was still an undercooked beta. But, more likely, they're probably just wanting folks to migrate to the newer version so they can refine it's qualities... :)

Regardless, from a developer's standpoint I'm not sure why one would want to point folks wishing to back-peddle to a version (6.12.35) with some obvious problems (as illustrated in my various post)...it'll only pollute their boards with new complaints (as they run into the same problems I did), make for a dissatisfied user base and waste a lot of people/machine-hours all-around...I hate to think of all the coal that will be burned just to bring this to a happy conclusion...I would ask, suggest and recommend that BOINC simply repost 6.12.43 to their pages and stop making it look like it never existed, it clearly solved some major problems with 6.12.35...well, my two-cents on the matter... :P

:)

Hem - no .43 version to fall back to.

Well it is dead again tonight - I check the activity showing All Processes Hierarchically and Under BOINC there is one process listed - boinc.
boinc - user is listed as Boinc_master - it is using .1 %Cpu 2 Threads and 11.1Mb
I can't find any WU's running though BOINC shows one Einstein and two Climate Processes - there clocks are not decrementing.
If I Quit BOINC and restart the WU's will run for several to ten's of minutes then hang.

So does someone on coding team need any additional data dumps to help decipher this issue?
Thanks
Curtis

Hi Curtis,

Just curious if you're seeing any other non-BOINC processes running at high rates when BOINC hangs for you. The issue I was encountering was an endless communications loop involving mDNSResponder, I was curious if you were seeing the same thing?

Also, I sent you a PM on this issue...at your convenience... :)

I didn't see any run away process. The Computer in general was running fine just BOINC was not doing WU's.

Last night I switched back to 6.12.35 and it has run for 20 hours now and kicked through a couple dozen MW, Einstein and SEti WU's. I am going to follow the link from Kashi and load .43 to avoid some of the other problems that Jimmy Gondek saw.
Thanks
Curtis
