Running an XFX radeon 6950 with 2gb memory. Installed the updated CCC AMD drivers and software from their site. Milkyway@home comes up with a notice "Catalyst driver version is not OK for OpenCl application with this GPU" What's going on? new drivers no good? Do I need to use an older ver of the drivers? I upgraded from a 6770 so I could do more GPU work units... so far seems it isn't working well cept for Poem@home. Milkyway at home still comes up with a notice... |

Running an XFX radeon 6950 with 2gb memory. Installed the updated CCC AMD drivers and software from their site. Milkyway@home comes up with a notice "Catalyst driver version is not OK for OpenCl application with this GPU" I mostly use version 11.9 of the drivers on my pc's, newer ones have given people problems and are better for gaming. Although I am using version 12.3 on one pc, but not here on MW. |

Not sure about your specific problem, but at OCN, we discovered the new 12.3 and 12.4 drivers are causing a lot of problems. I'm running 12.2 on the HD6990 box at the moment and would suggest one stick with that unless gaming or other needs demand an upgrade... 8-) |

Unsure what happened, but today I got a whole slew of work units for the GPU for milkyway@home. So far so good. |

No driver related problems here with Cat 12.3 and Cat. 12.4 on an unlocked HD6950. @tex: what's OCN and what problems? MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

My ATI 6950 is working fine with CCC 12.4. Just upgraded last night before I ran another batch through. |

Just got that weird error notice at first. Since I started getting work units I've kept getting them. Tearing through them like a maniac too. 1:09 for 1 task with the GPU. No overheating, no gaming issues, no BOINC issues anymore. Using all latest updated RADEON drivers from AMD website. Think it's 12.4. Had a 6770 b4. Thing overheated with whatever I through at it. Even simple games. Bad card. This new one is sick. My only complaint is the power usage. The card alone pulls an extra 200 watts when it's doing work units. Other card barely got above 100. Though this XFX card does have double heat dissapation and 2 PCI power plugs on it. lol All in all I'm happy now, esp with the way it tears up work units in milkyway@home. Doing near 100,000 work units a day now compared with 5,000-10,000 b4. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT! |

In CCC, you can reduce your power by 20%. Little difference in time and points. Just an FYI for 6950 owners.... http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/159 . I did mine a couple days ago. Very simple to do. |

Shader unlocking is cool, lowering the PowerTune target by 20% is not. The problem: this just lowers the frequency when the card would exceed the limit, but doesn't decrease the voltage. Therefore you don't gain any efficiency. And it only works IF the card would exceed the limit, otherwise you don't gain anything. If the card is drawing too much power: 1st reduce the voltage at stock clocks. There's lot's of safety margin. Tried 1.00 V at 810 MHz on my unlocked HD6950, no problems. Didn't bother trying any lower, stock is 1.10 V. That will already make it consume at lot less (I guess 20 - 30 W) without a performance loss. You won't reach OC clock speeds, though, but there's no free lunch.. If that's not enough lower the GPU clock a bit and simultaneously lower the voltage further. Efficiency of the card will go up, but performance will go down a bit. MrS Scanning for our furry friends since Jan 2002 |

Always thought that slider would reduce power consumption when moving to negative side. Guessed wrong. Thanks for the info. |
