Strange, I thought I posted my findings but I don't see it here. Ok, it was 5:30 in the morning! My very old laptop with 24MB was refused a WU, saying a WU needs 47.86MB of memory. So I guess that's the minimum required - unless not all WUs need the same amount? Regards Rod |

Pentium(r) II Processor 400MHz Win98, 3379sec Darn, I've been beaten! Be thankful my very old laptop doesn't have enough memory to run a Milkyway WU - its benchmark is about one third the speed of the above host! And yes, I do actually get some credits for work done on it. Rod |

Q9550 speed up to 3.65GHz. Completion time down to 130-132s/WU. for what it's worth .. seeing ya'll posting times is fun ... however it won't reflect ANY usefull/os performance .. To be clear who's the winner ... in order... 1. FreeBSD 32 bit 2. Linux 64 bit 3. Linux 32 bit 4. Windows 64 bit 5. OSX & Windows 32 bit same speed... That's all and there's no way toargue about OS cpu combination... that's the way it is and that'S it ... all further talk is BS.. Scrounged together some AMD parts today and have a 939 3800 X2 with a completion time of 231 seconds. The odd part about it is the 3800 @2.9 is beating my Intel 6320 running @3.15. I thought I read somewhere that the Intels are virtual 64 bit while the AMD's are actual. Both the proc's are running Hardy 8.04 64 bit, so the OS is not the issue. Anyone care to comment? Voltron |

AMD Opteron 285, 2GB RAM, @2.6GHz stock speed. Have 2 of these, one with Linux, one with Windows Linux Fedora Core 6, Boinc 5.10.21, fastest 341 sec with Ave 348 sec Windows XP, Boinc 5.10.38, fastest 351 sec with Ave 353 sec. Greater variation with the process times on Linux. |

Have just added an Intel P4 @2.53GHz with 1 GB RAM, 5.10.30, runs WU in 677 secs. Mine is nearly identical, Intel P4 @ 2.66GHz, 1GB Ram, 5.10.45, avg 625 secs. (also only run Boinc mem use max at 95% so it stays plenty cool), Doesn't expecting the unexpected make the unexpected the expected? If it makes sense, DON'T do it. |

One of my budget backup boxes got a tune up today, running a new install of Hardy 64. It's an AMD 939 X2 3600 (2 X 256 L2) pushed to 2.7ghz, with 2 sticks of Geil pc 4000. Best completion time is 249 seconds. I hung a 4 pound coolermaster heatsink on it with two 80 mm fans. Don't ya love it? Voltron |

But I dare not push it beyond 2.4GHz - needs too much voltage to go higher and gets too hot (even with two 8cm fans blowing cool air in at full bore above the heatsink. The cooler weather in the southern hemisphere should help. I have about a week before I will have to go to impulse power. The high temp later this week is forecast to be 88 F. I am counting on you Aussies to take over the leaderboard. I will hibernate until September. The only thing you can do with the Uli board is replace it. Well done; Voltron |

I have recently acquired a Phenom quad 9550 (2.2 ghz). I have been running a Q6600 (2.4 ghz) for over a month. The Phenom will push to 2.5 ghz, the Q6600 is a b***h to get to 2.9 ghz (I blame the Abit Fatality FP-IN9 SLI board). The Phenom is sitting on a Gigabyte GA-M61P-S3. Anyway, the Phenom has a completion time of 239 seconds. The Q6600 has a completion time of 251 seconds. They are both running versions of Ubuntu 8.04 X64. Either there is a huge difference in the motherboards, or the Phenom @ 2.5 is kicking the c#*p out of the Q6600 @ 2.9. Methinks AMD has a few secrets beyond ghz. What say you? Voltron |

I say at the same speed, the Phenom is faster than a 65nm Intel Core 2 Quad. The same may not apply with the 45nm Intels which, at least on Milkyway, are much quicker again. Haven't quite decided what my next quad core will be yet, but the Phenom 9850 Black Edition is cheaper than an Intel Q9300 in my town.
