Hi guys, just got my new system set up.

Stock Q9450 (2.67GHz) on Windows XP x86 SP3: 350s/WU

I'll probably switch to Vista x64 at some point, see what difference that makes. Play too many games to use Linux on a daily basis, sorry :P

Why stock? My guess is at least 3.6 ghz on a good board. Regarding my previous post regarding the Abit SLI board, this thing has the latest bios and it is clueless as to what to do with a Q6600. Switched the Q to a Gigabyte p965 board and it is running smooth as silk. Dumped a dual core into the Abit, and it still struggles. The Abit may be a great board for most, but the one I got is an electronic embarrassment.

You do know that you can dual boot with Linux and that Redmond product. Boot to Linux to crunch in 64 bit, boot to the "other" to gamo.

I fully intend to overclock it; sorry, should've made that clear. But right now I'm broke, on stock cooling, and short on time ;) I'll overclock it, but I'm in no rush at the moment.

As for dual booting, that's an option I guess, but I think I'd be switching around quite a bit, considering I do a lot of DirectX programming as well. (not to mention some GLSL stuff that's very easy to test in windows)

Hmm, I thought I'd be able to top (or bottom) that with my 300MHz Celeron (Covington, no L2 cache) with Ubuntu Hardy (command line). No luck - it took 3,982.77 seconds.

Might have to try the kids' 166MHz Pentium MMX... Nah!

Oh, go on, you'll probably make the top low score ;)

I tried attaching a Pentium 133MHz with only 24MB of RAM. Was told I needed at least 47.86MB. And yes, I do actually have it crunching some projects and earning a few credits!

Linux 8.04 (wubi) 64b / Q6600 @2.4GHz 450 secs
WinXP SP3 32b / X2 4200+ @2.4GHz 385 secs
WinXP SP3 32b / 3400+ @2.4GHz 382 secs

How come my Q6600 is running slower than the Athlons? Zed your's completed in 315 secs. Any ideas?

! of my quads is on linux @ stock speed and is still faster than on Windozescum @ 3.2Ghz
I would suggest maybe you swap at least 2 of those doze boxes to Kubuntu 64 and watch how much of a difference it makes to completion times

I'm more than likely going to switch my AMD's to Linux, too. But, my Q6600 is already on Linux and is running slower than my AMD's on Windows. That doesn't make sense.

Do you have a 64bit BOINC Client installed on it?

It's not overheating (and thus throttling)? The CPU does tend to get hotter when running in 64bit mode.

Actually, my computer seems to be running better in Linux now. Vista was giving me problems, hence the switch. I did not go for the full native install of Ubuntu 8.04, it's the wubi version (http://wubi-installer.org/), supposedly better than running a Live CD. And I am running the 64-bit BOINC client and operating system.

Some tasks seem to take a bit shorter than others. Don't know why. On average your machine appears to do 160-165s/WU. Q9450 doing well ;)

Ok, I may have found a problem. The measured floating point speed is listed as only 1605 million ops/sec. It should be close to 2400. I'm not knowledgeable of Linux enough to know how to fix it. Perhaps, I do need to run Linux natively and not through a Windows installer (wubi) like I am now.

FIXED: Ubuntu seems to have a throttle set to save resources even if you want to run 100%: CPU frequency/scaling with Linux
This worked to get performance back!
