I have been away from this part of reality for some 10 years. Now I'm back for more. For the life of me though, I can't figure out what all the hubub is about with the "credits" (awarded for processor time)? Can I trade the credits for "stuff" or is it just a method by which we can stroke our egos? I do need another hard drive and a sandwich would be good too... |

I have been away from this part of reality for some 10 years. Now I'm back for more. Credits are more of a "status" symbol.....no physical/monetary reward for them, sorry friend. |

I have been away from this part of reality for some 10 years. Now I'm back for more. I have a used 20gb harddrive you can have for the cost of shipping! Blurf is correct credits are used to help track your positive, or negative, progress thru the different projects. ALTHOUGH you must be careful as each project gives credits based on its own wants and needs, so comparing credits from project a to project b is not a valid comparison. |

All the credits in the world and $5.00 will get you a latte at Starbucks. |

Thanks Mikey. I have a stack of 40 gb ide drives. I could still eat the sandwich... Blurf, I just wonder what happened to the scientific curiosity that motivated our actions. Greed and science don't mix well. I miss those days. And therein lies yet another soap box to stand on... Wisdom: Quit worrying about what you have or don't have. Thanks Mikey. I have a stack of 40 gb ide drives. I could still eat the sandwich... Yeah those old drives are pretty worthless aren't they! I have a stack of a bunch of different sized ones, they ARE good for Linux Boinc only machines though as Ubuntu Linux is small and doesn't take a lot of space. I keep looking for hard drive makers to reuse their old platters and put out 160gb drives for around 40 bucks, but I haven't seen them yet. I have MOSTLY Boinc only Windows machines now and they don't need TB sized drives in them!! Oh and their is another saying "those who die with the most toys wins", I kinda like that one too. |

Corallary to "those who die with the most toys wins." Death seems to take away the significance of the toys you collected, and the rest of us want to know why you didn't share them sooner. |

Those old drives are still very useful. I recently upgraded the computers at home and will be stripping the drives for the platters. A web page I found which I have lost made a suggestion I found awesome. It had a heading something like... Worried about the security of your old data on old drives? Don't be. Most older drives have at least 2 platters. Take them apart add a little felt and you have the coolest coasters in the world! When I take mine apart I will probably scratch the side i will attach the felt on to ensure data loss (drives were already formatted multiple times with junk data written to them between formats) and the left-over parts are gonna go to some local e-waste recycler. Just my 2 cents.... the pics looked really cool too. “Any fool can know. The point is to understand.†― Albert Einstein I on the other hand am just confused. |

Those old drives are still very useful. I have never heard of that, the coaster part I mean, but I wipe my old drives with DBAN, it can wipe them as many times as you choose, even US DOD specs. It does it by writing ones to every little part of the drive then coming back and writing zeros to those same parts, as many time as you like. |

I just run some sandpaper over mine, or drill a hole through them. |

I just run some sandpaper over mine, or drill a hole through them. I do have a stack of old drives I am going to run a drill thru, but I may take one or two apart just to see inside. These are drives that just won't be recognized by any system so I can't wipe them. |
