Hi everyone!

You may have noticed the lack of n-body runs. This has been due to the fact at a recent conference, we thought of some really cool science we could try to implement in the next release. We have derived a new dwarf galaxy model to make our simulations more realistic. I have spent the last few weeks deriving, implementing, and testing this new model, and I think we are almost ready for a new N-Body release!

How about less "really cool science" and "new dwarf galaxy models" and more computing on what milkyway@home is supposed to be doing? Completing a 3d model of the universe... And seriously, it's got me boggled as to why that is so hard. See stars, get pc's to measure red shift, plot in 3d model. Why the hell does that take so long?

MilkyWay@Home is not doing anything with the large scale structure of the Universe. We are trying to map dark matter in the Milky Way galaxy. Knowing this gives us rich information about how galaxies evolve and what dark matter is. In order to do this, we model collisions with the Milky Way by dwarf galaxies. We can deduce the location of dark matter from the resulting collisions via a long list of complicated calculations that have very many subtleties that make this science very difficult (hence why MilkyWay@Home is such a novel instrument).

The time scale of our results comes from the need to optimize a 7-dimensional surface with no known functional form. The reason our model is so important is so that we can know for sure that we have a working method before we can trust the results we get from real data. I am proud to report that this is going very well and that we expect a publication on this science very soon.
