Hello !! This post already exists on BOINC forums -> see it here

Hello !!

First of, I have to say that I made many many search about my problem, and I found nothing useful (or nothing was working).

So, here is my problem :
I recently bought a brand new video card for my gaming computer, an ATI R9 280X 3Go. This card worked only one time, on Milkyway@home project. It was 2 days ago.

But since I restarted my computer, my GPU is suddenly "incompatible" with BOINC.

When I freshly installed BOINC on my computer, the GPU was already not working. But I installed a software called AMD APP SDK (Accelerated Parallel Processing) and when I restarted BOINC, it "stopped working" due to a BEX64 event, but was still able to work (and compute) with my GPU.

I didn't know what was happening with my computer and BOINC, however it worked so I though everything was alright.

But when I restarted my computer, the BEX64 event was still there and the GPU computing was unavailable and an error message shows "ATU GPU R600 (R38xx) does not support OpenCL".

Here is the complete log from a fresh restart of BOINC to the moment it starts calculating (skipped resumed and suspended tasks event) :

It's a combination of AMD recycling their GPU codenames with a message set by the server at Milkyway@Home. They check for what GPU version is sent back by BOINC, to give you that message.

So at first you'll have to report this to Milkyway, as it's their message (Message from server).
You may also want to try to use BOINC 7.2.38 --the present alpha version. This one definitely has code that will put the R9 280X in the correct category:
case 20:
            gpu_name="AMD Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 280X series (Tahiti)";

For links to BOINC 7.2.38 and the change log leading up towards it, see post 52011 in the Change Log thread.
<-- This have been done (see the logs)

Try upgrading to the new version of Boinc 7.2.38 and see if that helps. You can get it here: http://www.primegrid.com/hosts_user.php I see version 7.2.39 is out now, you may want to try that too. BOTH are test versions, meaning they may work and they may not.

I've been running that for a while, and it works fine (after a brief hiccup with the 32-bit installer).The download link is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

But it won't change the behaviour of existing project applications or servers.

OK, so I may have to eat my words here.

The OP for this thread has posted at BOINC (using his alter ego 'PlaysGames11') that the MilkyWay server is now seeing his Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 280X series (Tahiti) as OpenCL capable and producing valid work here.

It's not entirely clear whether it's the upgrade to BOINC v7.2.39 that's done it, or "the latest" (unversioned, unfortunately) Catalyst driver. But host 557409 is producing validated work on that GPU.

Hello,

If you run on a R9 280X*, you can download BOINC v 7.2.39 here, but you will also need AMD APP (Accelerated Parallel Processing)

If this doesn't work, uninstall your current Catalyst Driver AND Software, then restart your computer. Download the latest Catalyst and install it.

If you got an issue while unistalling your driver, uninstall it in Safe Mode.

* This worked for me. If you have a Radeon HD 7870/7950/7970/R9 270X/R9 290X, you may try this solution but I didn't tested with these cards.

The only solution that might work until MW upgrades the server software would be an app_info.xml.

http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/download/milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_ati_101

That is the only GPU app that I saw in downloads that will work on your cards.

<app_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit</app_name>
<version_num>136</version_num>
<avg_ncpus>0.040000</avg_ncpus>
<max_ncpus>0.567833</max_ncpus>
<plan_class>opencl_ati_101</plan_class>
<file_ref>
<file_name>milkyway_separation__modified_fit_1.36_x86_64-apple-darwin__opencl_ati_101</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
<coproc>
<type>ATI</type>
<count>1.0000</count>
</coproc>
</app_version>
</app_info>

An app_info.xml should looks something like that, but I cannot test it as I do not have an actual Mac with appropriate hardware anymore.

Thx Arkayn!

I'll try this asap and give results here!

To be continued... ;-)

Edit:
app_info.xml created & installed
App installed
Boinc reinstalled

The event log says:
Sam 8 nov 21:02:08 2014 | Milkyway@Home | Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform
Sam 8 nov 21:02:08 2014 | Milkyway@Home | [error] State file error: bad application name milkyway_separation__modified_fit
(on the 2 computers)

I've checked the name, it seems good!

An idea?

Hi Arkayn!

The new one is OK but there is a little mistake (syntax error):

</file_info> is missing after <executable/>

After that MW takes WUs but they all finish in error immediatly with this message:

Stderr output

<core_client_version>7.4.26</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
process exited with code 255 (0xff, -1)

</stderr_txt>
]]>

I see it's a permission problem but i don't know why???
I've reinstalled Boinc after app_info modif!

Thx.

Try a chmod +x on the app, just to make sure.

You need to use the sudo command as well.

sudo chmod +x

Not quite, you still have a problem with the Tahiti XT Mac, the OpenCL driver is too old and not allowing you to use the card. You have nothing but errors on it.

Might want to upgrade the system software on that machine to newest.
