I'm sure a lot of you guys have already heard about this, but SETI@home maybe in trouble. The Arecibo Observatory, home of the radio telescope that the SETI data comes from, is probably going to have to make massive budget cuts, and one of the programs cut will be SETI@home. You can find a small article on it here: http://www.g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/post/686804/Help_Save_SETI.html?utm_source=g4tv&utm_medium=rssfeeds&utm_campaign=TheFeed I'm sure you can find a more formal announcement somewhere on the SETI@home or Arecibo observatory site, though. Figured anyone that hadn't heard about this would be interested/concerned and should know what might happen in the near future. ~Nate~ |

They have been talking for some time that it would be shut down. Is it A lack up funding or politics ? |

Thanks Nathan, a good reminder. That article you linked is from July 2008 when a number of others appeared - a good summary is in WikiNews at http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Searching_for_asteroids,_extraterrestrial_life_a_little_more_rocky:_Budget_cuts_threaten_to_close_Arecibo,_world%27s_largest_radio_telescope (may wrap). I haven't seen anything more recent than that discussing specifics of the potential closure. The telescope's web site at http://www.naic.edu/ lists no recent news. So for now I think we just keep lobbying the relevant bodies and the new US government to keep it running! |
