What is the most attractive WU`s for the project? Is it n-body or any other? Or does it not make any difference? Im not talking about WUs for the members but for the projects result. |

What is the most attractive WU`s for the project? Is it n-body or any other? Or does it not make any difference? They all need crunching, the n-body units will use every cpu core you have for each unit, while the other kinds of units will each run on a single cpu core. the n-body units seem to have a higher error rate, for alot of people, then the other kinds of units. Most people get some errors, some are reporting as high as 3% but others are only at 1%. |

I see. After a few months off i let my old PC crunching again. Its at my office at work so its not in the way at home. It only have a AMD x2 4600 CPU and a 7800 GTX which dosent crunch. It gives around 550 in avarage credit, far from the modern crunching station most of the active members hass. Is there any point of using it? Also i let my "newer" PC from 2009 crunch at home. But its just a few hours a day when its not in use. At night i must switch it of. |

I see. After a few months off i let my old PC crunching again. Its at my office at work so its not in the way at home. As long as work is willing to pay for the electricity usage than yes it is, every little bit helps. Also i let my "newer" PC from 2009 crunch at home. But its just a few hours a day when its not in use. At night i must switch it of. Do what you can when you can, there is no need to even try to compete with the people with tons of pc's! Every unit needs crunching, if your pc does one unit while the heavy hitters do 30 units it doesn't matter, YOUR unit could still be the ONE that finds something new and interesting. Sure their odds are greater, but isn't that why people play the lottery, to defy the odds and win. Keep on crunching!!! |

Thank you, sir. I`ll continue crunching. Since last time I have taken my GFX card from my home PC to PC that crunches at work, AMD HD4830. So it can work 24/7. Sad thing is, it runs on 50 % and takes about twice as long time to crunch a WU than on my home PC. Seems like AMD x2 4600 is way to weak to feed the card. I suspended the WU`s that runs on CPU, that helped and GFX worked on 97 %. But then the finished WU`s didnt report back. I guess you are familiar whit that issue. Well well, I wont complain and just keep it going. But if any have a good advice I will be grateful. TLS |

Thank you, sir. I`ll continue crunching. Go into Your Account, Computing Preferences and then look for this: On multiprocessors, use at most 0 means no restriction Enforced by version 6.1+ Change that to 50 so only 1 of your two cpu cores will be crunching cpu units, that way the other one will be used to feed the gpu keeping it happy. You can then go back to crunching both cpu and gpu units without the problems you were seeing. This is a GLOBAL change, meaning all of your pc's on MilkyWay will be affected by this change. If that is NOT what you want then I can tell you how to do it so only ONE pc is affected. |

I did like you told me. At first it didnt work, so I gave it up. But right before I left work I discovered that the settings kicked in. I hope I will find it like that on monday morning as well. I also crunch with CPU on my home PC. Im sure its not that big of a loss to only use 50 % on a 4 core CPU. Some day I will buy a GFX to this PC too, but unfortunately I dont have so much money to spend on hardware today. I am very fond of and interested in the science around black matter so its a lot of fun to contribute. Thanks for reply and interest mikey. You have helped a lot. |

I did like you told me. At first it didnt work, so I gave it up. But right before I left work I discovered that the settings kicked in. To change it on each pc you have to click the Boinc Manager icon and then click Tools, computing preferences and on the 2nd line up from the bottom of the processor usage tab put 75 in the box on your quad core, be sure to click OK to save the settings. You may then have to do the same thing on your dual core machine at work, but with only two cores it might be just fine as it adjusts down to the next appropriate setting. Meaning if you put 99 it will adjust down to the next level of cores, so on a quad core a setting of 99 is the same as putting 75 in the box. On a dual core 99 is the same as putting 50 in the box. 99 means do NOT use all of the cpu cores but instead one less, one less means different things to different cpu's. |
