I am new to crunching big numbers on Milkyway but something strange happened last night - I'm hoping someone can help!

Before today, I saw modified fit 1.36 WUs taking very little CPU usage to initiate and close down eg my i7-920 could start 4 simultaneously on about 20% usage lasting about 5 secs.

From today onwards, the same number of WUs is taking about 95% CPU usage over about 30 secs! No other (material) processes are running.

I haven't changed anything in the set up - it has been running continuously over the last 24 hours. Any ideas why this has happened and how to reverse it?? FWIW, the WUs are running on a HD5970.

Thanks

I (and some others) noticed the same after upgrading to Windows 10: http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=3817

But your computers seem to be on Windows 7, so I'm not sure what might be causing this. Maybe Catalyst upgrade ?

Thanks Mumak.

Yes this is on Win 7 and across several different machines. I will check to see if some kind of patch update got applied on Saturday night but it's very strange because I didn't change anything manually.

Anyone else experienced this on Win 7??

Windows 7 with an HD6950 is showing the same thing. At the start of a Modified Fit job, there is no GPU activity for 40-45 seconds, then there is GPU activity for 15-20 seconds and the job finishes. The Modified Fit tasks used to take 25-30 seconds, now they are taking 55-65 seconds.

Sounds like something definitely changed.

I don't think the issue is on server (code) side. The standard MilkyWay@Home v1.02 application is affected too and that's 3 years old code, the ModFit application is 1 year old.
It seems the issue is on some systems only - if I check the results of other machines, some of them spend only ~2 secs on CPU, while others 30-50 secs. Same GPUs, AMD drivers...
Could be a combination of new Catalyst + hardware ?

I completely agree: at the moment my dual core 2.2Ghz AMD X2 + HD5870 is pwning my 3.8GHz quad core i7 + HD5970 due to this! And they're both running Win 7 with latest patches and the same catalyst (15.7.1).
