I suspect both BOINC and NVIDIA consider out personal machines perhaps more trouble then we are worth. Why? I considered myself an exemplary neophyte, having spent more then $1,000 on my special build rig. It contributed tens of millions of stones at low power to Einstein@home which was its objective. Recently it was returning about 140,000 stones per day at about 350 watts. Then several things happened. First, I swapped out a GTX 660 and installed a GTX 750. The entire rig collapsed. Second, in my attempts to re-engineer the chaos the rig created hundreds of error work units. The Rig: ASROK seven pcie game board and case. Platinum power supply. Three functioning GPUs [2 x gtx 650 + gtx 660]. The rig would actually run four GPUs but became unstable. No error work units but stopped production. So I retreated to three GPUs. Third, these error units seem to have resulted in my machine being denied further Einstein work units. Certainly understandable. Sort of. Fourth, with much effort I managed to return the rig to its previous operable condition. Fifth, I tested the rig on MilkyWay with success. Sixth, I petitioned Einstein@home for permission to receive work units with no success. This stinks of some sort Post Doc (if even that) having been relegated to gin-up ways to use nerds-on-the-net for specious grant money and little else. Otherwise we would have one simple thing. Specifically, dummy units to use to test our rigs. It is apparently not even worth that effort, or the effort to simply to reject the eror units and permit a reset. I think the jig is up guys. ____________ |

TIME is on your side, every time we return a 'bad' unit we get docked some units for the next time we ask for new units, it's a Boinc thing NOT a Project thing. The idea is once a rig starts returning bad units why keep sending it more units so it can trash them too, which then causes more work for the server that then has to reschedule and resend all those units. There is a formula that is used but basically the more good units you return the faster you return to your max allowable allotment of units you can get per day. Apparently you HAVE been returning valid units as right now at 6:15AM East Coast US time you have In progress (132) units to work on. |

Fact is, and nobody wants to hear it, if 2 million people are running the software fine and you can't, you have a problem with your personal machine, probably hardware. For a shoestring project, whose goal is more to provide free resources to grad students in CS and the other sciences so they can finish their degrees than to actually 'do science', it's impossible to personally contact every individual with bad gear. There is plenty of enthusiastic and willing help to be found on the message boards if you make the effort to pursue it. Nobody wants to hear their computer is hosed and nobody wants to spend the time, money and effort to look into it. The only real option is to cut off the bad performers. If they actually want to step up and provide free resources to education, they'll fix it. If not, they'll go play a browser game. Me, I'm having fun watching my new build here finish off the MT wu's in a minute 10 seconds. ; |
