Message 65924 - Posted: 19 Nov 2016, 19:05:43 UTC - in response to Message 65923.

Hi all,

I noticed something interesting. Today I got new AIO water cooling for my old 2500K and overclock it default bios 3.2 to 4.2Ghz. When I look milkyway tasks percentace of "Completed, validation inconclusive" become high numbers then before. Mine R9 270x same not overclocked and same driver. Any thoughts about this ?

Odd, as I thought if a processor was too overclocked it crashed, as the OS is running on it. I know that GPUs can create errors without crashing if slightly overclocked (you get artefacts on the display).

I tested with primegrid cpu tasks no error. windows 10 running smoothly, no display glinch or lag. CPU temp 55-60 Celsius. GPU-Z shows GPU temp 58 celcius ,load %96. I don't know what cause this.

I guess overclocking screws up in one particular way first. And MW must use that weakest part of your processor. I guess you just have to back off the speed until the errors go away.

On that note, my PC is also Prime95 stable and error free, even while crunching for MW@H. It is kind of odd that WUs would get computation errors like this.

Find the problem and solved :)
Like always M$ ruined gpu drivers, Before installing AIO water cooling I upgrade the windows 10 insider build 14971. So I install latest driver again after build upgrade and "validation inconclusive" gone. I have to remember driver installation after M$ new build comes :)

Jake -

Any idea when you will get the bundled LINUX GPU workunits to run successfully (validation errors)?

To some extent I actually regret using an AMD card for crunching purely from an electricity bill standpoint.
AMD cards just use SO much more power than Nvidia cards. I've had to scale back my GPU crunching just to try get my power bill back under control.

With my CPU and GPU crunching, my PC is pulling about 460 Watts. It's nuts when combined with Australian electricity prices. So I have to scale back my crunching :(

Thats the other thing I liked about my old 280 card.... It just worked with BOINC! Simple.
Now days because I'm running a 390, every times there's a change (like now) I've got to try and remember how to fix the app_config file! Hate it!

This is an exaggeration. Actually, Nvidia cards are very inefficient at MilkyWay due to their severely crippled FP64 performance (exept Titans, but if you have money for Titans, you probably don't care about few watts of electric power). And even in FP32, the difference between AMD and Nvidia is perhaps several tens of watts, you will save a couple of cents only, it's hardly worth breaking your head over it.

One sure way to reduce your power consumption is to turn down your heater and use the thermal energy discarded by your GPUs to heat up your living room (at least during winter, this doesn't apply to your current Australian weather of course).

What I find an absolute nightmare is trying to get AMD drivers to load when I also have NVidia GPU running:-( Dunno what the secret is but its eluded me..
I have a 390 lying around unused because I haven't been able to get it working in conjunction with my GTX980ti's or any other Nvidia gpu.

I also miss the ability that E@H has to select how many tasks run in project configs.

Anyways I already have a electricity bill problem, had to pay 100 quid a week for the last 2 weeks to get my bill down to a manageable size:-/ So I'm not gonna bother with the 360, it can languish in a corner:-)
Regards,
Cliff.

I didn't think that was possible, I'd never try mixing the cards. In fact I've even had problems when replacing a Nvidia with an AMD, if you don't remove the Nvidia driver first, it goes mental when it sees an AMD card and gives a blue screen. And since the Nvidea card was dead, that proved very difficult. I only use AMD (the above was a friend's machine I was trying to repair) since Nvidia like to overheat, they're less powerful for the money, and I don't much like their drivers!

I have both on win10 PC and no problem only first to install AMD driver because main GPU and next Nvidia.

Humm, I've NEVER liked AMD drivers, they have pretty much always been behind the curve until recently, I see that finally they have decided to adopt cuda for compute tasks as well.
I have until recently always run amd cpu's and motherboards, but have recently branched out into intel cpu's, old xeon cpu's and motherboards since they are fairly cheap 2nd hand, never could afford brand new intel kit:-)

Next year when AMD's Zen cpus and skt4 motherboards are out I might get another AMD setup, but not with amd gpus..

For most compute projects NVidia gpus work fine MW@H is one of the few where those shine. And I run 3 projects and on 2 of those NVidia works great. This is the only one where they perform less well than amd's gpu's. And until recently they were less power hungry:-)
Regards,
Cliff.

Hi Rymorea,

Well I usually, in fact always have GTX gpu's as the primary gpu in a rig, so I suppose that would explain the problem with drivers:-)

Since I mainly do projects where NVidia gpu's work best I'll continue to use Nvidia's offerings as my main gpu.

Looking at gpu types/brands NV Gpu's are far more in use than AMD ones, and since electricity is expensive in the UK using a gpu that doesn't draw high current is preferable:-)

I've only recently had had problems with my power bill, and that was down to trying to run 5 computers during peak charge times, needless to say I've cut back.
Regards,
Cliff.

I'm in the UK too and got massive bills after doing Bitcoin mining. Luckily I'm on DD with EDF, who spread it out for ages. What you need to do is bypass your meter ;-)

Where did you hear that? All I can find is another company making a compiler to make them work on AMD:

AFAIR it was either Anandtech or Techpowerup in a news blurb.. Not perzakkerly a surprise to find out is not quite happening as yet. Neither firm has any great liking for the other.. to the detriment of consumers. Like Nvidia's little snooping telemetry, looks like everyone is getting on the M$ bandwagon for spying on their customers:-/

Yeah, and have them send some snooper around to find out why my power consumption has dropped suddenly:-)

Believe me if there was some way of cutting into the incoming power line and splicing it off to a 2nd consumer unit and running my rigs off that supply I'd be very interested.

But its not quite possible, I trained as a spark in the RAF, but time has taken its toll, at 71 going on 72 I'm not about to start hacking into walls etc or running new wiring:-)

I'm on fixed DD, at 38 squids per month, but my last little foray onto 24/7 left me having to play catchup at 100 squid per week:-(

And my pension was'nt of the investment banker variety.. So me and the moggie are watching our rations and tightening ye old belt etc, but I'll have caught up by next week.
Regards,
Cliff.

Working for me (i5 3570K and AMD R9 290 are both receiving tasks).

Absolutely no problem, look at this pc:
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/show_host_detail.php?hostid=581360
It's not a problem to mix cards and it's not a problem to mix apps.
I can run GPUGRID and MW at the same time on the nVidea card, Einstein and MW on AMD and Einstein on Intel.
