Does anybody have tips for making the old AMD 6970 run faster. I'm running Win 10 with the latest AMD drivers. I've tried running 1 to 4 apps and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've tried staggering the tasks so they don't line up but that doesn't make a difference either, plus they all end up at 20% increments eventually. The GPU goes to 100% for a few seconds then goes to 0% for 20 seconds while the CPU maxes out.

I have a GTX 470 in the same machine and it stays at 100% the whole time with no breaks. I know not the greatest for MW but I still use it.

Thanks for any help.

You probably need to reserve a cpu core for each gpu, that way they will both crunch at their max, it sounds like you are only reserving one cpu core for gpu crunching.

I have my 6970s running at 955/1375 and I run 2 WUs simultaneously. Two seems to be optimal. I try to keep them staggered, but you know how that goes. I leave 1 core free only to be splitted between them.

what do you have set as your CPU reserve in your app_config.xml? when I install MW on a x5670 it defaults to 0.696.

with 2 WUs I have it set to half that at 0.35. is that good or bad?

You need to run a program like MSI Afterburner to tell you, it will let you know how much your gpu is running and then you change the numbers and see again. The numbers in the app_config are just a suggestion anyway it doesn't use exactly that much, that's just a max amount to use.

Well if you are getting 100 sec per WU or less. 6970 has good 64 performance. Using two Wu in parallel you are good. look if you are maintaining an even 100 percent work use in AMD/ATI control panel. Use two WU to maintain 100 GPU use.

I use .25 CPU per WU but i am using a 1700x at 3950 your CPU will matter.

/data/Bonic/milkyway.cs.rpi.edu_milkyway/app_config.xml

<app_config>
<app>
<name>milkyway</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.30</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Is what i would suggest
