Hey Everyone, I just wanted to updated everyone on some of the current scientific work and results coming out of MilkyWay@home. These results can be found in my PhD thesis which I posted here. The major result from this work is that we have mapped 7 stellar streams in the Milky Way halo. We believe two of these streams are likely to newly discovered streams. These results would not have been possible without the contributions of the MilkyWay@home volunteers. Looking forward we hope to improve our mapping algorithms to find map new stellar streams and better fit those we have already found. Thank you. Jake |

Thank you. It doesn't change much for MilkyWay@home. We will continue working on mapping other structures in the halo and I will continue working as a post doctoral researcher. Jake |

So modest! Congratulations Dr Weiss, I know what a milestone submitting your dissertation and successfully defending it can feel like, and well done continuing into a postdoc! For my part it's gratifying to see what my computations are helping produce, and I'm now grinding my way through the parts that don't elude my mathematical/statisical abilities. |

Congratulations on your ongoing work, and nicely done. Question... I believe I understand that a lot of the mapping of these stellar streams revolves (sorry, pun not intended) around gravity theory, and the idea that dark matter is responsible for the structures and the organization of these structures, not to mention the cohesion of the galaxy at large. Since I cannot open the link to your thesis, I am unable to read if this is also your understanding and conclusion, or if perhaps plasma cosmology is also a consideration in your work. Please understand I am not attempting to start a debate here, just asking the question, since there is a lot of recent discussion involving plasma cosmology as an alternative to the theory of dark matter. Since I have only a terribly superficial understanding of this, and am still in a learning phase with a nearly vertical learning curve, any insight, if you feel it is worth your time, would be appreciated. I am a bit surprised that no one has bothered to answer the queries as to the PhD thesis link no longer working? I didn't realize that the links to the PhD theses weren't working. I'll see if I can do something about that. I will also try to get around to updating the science pages here. They are certainly lacking. Best, Tom |
